Just as Earl81 said, it's all about flexibility and a little luck. Some bases, a pilot may get a quick transition into bigger equipment or if one is flexible be able to move around for the right equipment.
An outstation is where a pilot is not "based" at the base they fly into at night, rather they spend the day at home and stay at a crew layover at night.
