I agree that the "any traffic please advise" is kinda useless, unless, I've already heard the guy at the airport I'm approaching. Then, I'd rather ask that just to make sure he heard me.
Also, I'm in a Lear and the time it takes you in a cessna or piper to go from one end of downwind to the other, I'm going from 35 miles out to base leg intercept. I'd much rather establish 2 way communication with you in the pattern of an uncontrolled airport, then run you over, because I assumed you heard me and I couldn't find you in the pattern on my way in.
I agree, I'm sure the FAA will change the Aeronautical Information Manual after there's a bunch of dead people scatter across a cow pasture...that's pretty much how they operate.
