I wouldn't say I have a Silver Spoon, but I'm not hurting right now. I'm a middle-aged (41) career changer and I've found an ATP/CTP course in driving distance (no hotel needed) from my home for $3k (expensive, but not as much as many places like the $5k quoted above, and not breaking the bank). The way I see it, when the regionals (any of them, not just AW) finally start hiring, They'll probably be looking for people that can get started the fastest and who they don't have to pay extra training for. If I already have the ATP/CTP done, that's going to put me ahead of someone that doesn't have it done.

Oh boy. I hope you're not offering refunds with these bold predictions.

well, currently TOTAL TSA numbers are seeing about a 22% week over week increase, mostly domestic. Right now it is right at 15% of last year making domestic flying roughly 18-20% of last year. There are roughly 27 weeks between now and the Christmas holidays. Now clearly the 22% week over week increase CAN’T continue because it is held back by the absence of international flying and other limiting factors but domestic flying? Yeah, that can get back to 95% of normal, but I think most of that’s going to go to the single type airlines (and maybe Alaska) because the Big Three are still going to be screwed over by their multi fleet related displacement and training problems.

I don’t know what the right answer is in these current circumstances but there was a point in time where about half of the new hires at Air Wisconsin had paid for a type rating just to have something to make their resume stand out. They spent probably around $20,000 or so to get a job that paid less than flight instructing. So to spend $5,000 to get a job doesn’t sound ridiculous in comparison. I’m not saying whether or not it’s the right thing to do but I’m just saying that you wouldn’t be the first or last person to spend money to add something to your resume.

Getting an ATP is definitely not the same as PFT but neither is getting a type rating. I don’t see paying for an ATP or a type rating as being really necessary but PFT is certainly a bad idea. Who was the infamous Continental express 1900 outfit that was notorious for that crap?
