I find that everyone “hangs their hat” on sick call abuse as the reason they didn’t pass the CPP. After 10+ years at Xjet I left with under 10hrs in my sick bank. I just made sure I had doctors notes (especially around holidays) and didn’t use sick time to extend my vacation.

I know of more guys who were shot down for no degree but were given the opportunity to get one then head to UA

Sorry to bump an old thread, but wanted to add a new twist. Skywest living in base or commuting to Air Wisconsin? thinking Skywest is the obvious answer despite my biases, but curious what people at Air Wisconsin think

I actually am, but okay. Have CJO from both, I'm not a fan of Skywest, but commuting sounds like hell. Not sure why I seemed like a troll to you but tbh seems like you're the only troll here.

I'm a troll because I question why this would even be a question for someone? Lol okay man. Like you said, the answer to your question is obvious.

Okay, I guess everyone is born with 121 experience to know what to do? I was sincerely interested in what people's thoughts were. I'd rather work for an ALPA carrier and United is my top choice for a career destination, but I'm the troll for asking an honest question? I literally said this: "thinking Skywest is the obvious answer despite my biases, but curious what people at Air Wisconsin think."

I don't know why you felt the need to come at me, but I sincerely hope everything is going okay on your end. Not a good sign when someone feels the need to spend their free time trolling people on APC, so I really hope you're doing okay bud.

In general, driving to work is way better than flying to work. I’ve done both, and when I started driving, my QOL greatly improved.

That being said, there are so many more variables to consider. Do you have a family? Kids? Commuting will take away time with them. While there’s really no such thing as a “simple” commute, some commutes are way better than others. Questions like, can you commute on your own airline? In the case of AW, can you commute on United? One-leg commute?

AW has a good commuter provision, so that takes some pressure off.

But all-in-all, I would rather drive than fly to work.

Good luck!

I fly with lots of people that came from SkyWest, so if getting to United is your goal, either company will accomplish that. The biggest factor is a quality resume and a healthy dose of dumb luck. Don’t think of Aviate as the only way to get hired at United either. Technically more are hired from outside the program than from within it. SkyWest isn’t ALPA, but they are a well well run company that will be flying for United and others for years to come. Air Wisconsin is an ALPA company that has also been a good airline, but unless a legacy moves larger aircraft to their operation, an airline flying only old 200’s is not a safe long term bet. Another factor to consider when United does decide to retire the 200’s, is how it will affect both companies. If Air Wisconsin can’t secure large RJ flying, they won’t survive. SkyWest operates a bunch of 200’s for United and retiring that fleet with no replacements could have major impacts on their staffing requirements as well. I’d say that living in base and flying for the bigger company would not only provide a higher QOL while you build a resume, but you’d be less likely to face the hardships that the pilots from Compass, ExpressJet, and TSA have faced.

I’ve commuted, and it’s not great. For example, you bid later show times, say 1 or 2 in the afternoon, and you still end up waking up at 5am because you want to make sure you get there on time and you end up getting to work 4 or 5 hours early. By the end of the day you are finishing up dog tired. For me I would have to drink coffee in the afternoon to avoid being too tired. Then I wouldn’t sleep well that night because of all the coffee and I would likely have an early show the next day and be working with a total amount of sleep over the course of a couple of nights that was not even close to what I would like. Sometimes half. And then I was back drinking coffee all day again to stay awake. For me it was all a chain of events that began with commuting. It’s not for me.

Yeah I work at ZW and it’s really a no brainer. I live in base, so it’s great. Our healthcare is amazing l if that’s important to you, you fly with a lot of the same people which can be really good since were so small. That said OO is better diversified, has non-50 seat jets, and is paid better. If you live in a OO base, seems pretty straightforward. Only question is whether or not you can hold said base out of training. Also, bases close…ask all our CAE guys who got the rug pulled out from them. Same with ORF, PHL, etc. in the end it’s a personal choice based on your circumstances & here’s the fun part, you won’t know if it was the correct choice until after you’ve left…
