Looking for insight
 
Military pilot here trying to make my transition to civilian flying. I am thinking about applying here to bridge the gap between the military and civilian flying. Can anyone shed some light on the commuting policy at Air Wisconsin? Can I commute on any airline? Do they have a 2 attempt rule? Forgive my ignorance but I've been doing the military gig a long time and am trying to do my research before making any decisions. Thanks for the help!

Two attempt?: Yes.

But everyone would recommend living in base tho.

Agreed this makes a big difference, but living in base is not an option for everyone (spouse, kids, etc).

One issue with MKE and CAE, neither is usually commutable. Depending on where you live, you should plan on using your off days to travel to and from work. ORD is better for commuting, but it will be close to 9-12 months or more before you are a lineholder (but you can hold reserve there right away).

Looking for some insight as well, I've got a class date set for January I've got to relocate though, I have family in Charlotte, NC. I've never made the drive before to Colombia, SC, would this be a doable option if I was reserve to start? How long might one expect before holding a line in CAE? What are your reserve times like, I.e. Ready reserve, short call, long call.

Lastly, is Air Wisconsin the place to go if you need to fly your **s off for a short period of time to get some 121 time.

Ready reserve is pretty rare, but you have to be at the airport all day. Normal reserve is a two hour callout so it looks like you’d be ok in Charlotte. No long call. People are getting awarded lineholder status towards the end of training in CAE so you might spend a month on reserve if that continues to hold.

I’ve flown, on average, about 87 hours a month after OE.

I live in the Charlotte area. Depending on traffic it’s 1:30 to 1:45 drive to CAE airport

IMO, if you can drive to CAE, Air Wisconsin is a no-brainier for you. You will get seniority there fast and could likely upgrade in 16-18 months, maybe sooner.

Retired military pilot here at F9.

I totally agree with the votes to live in domicile, many airline types commute, but don’t fall for it. Plus it limits your scheduling options for extra flying at some places/callout times.

Also, no knock on AW, but definitely try at least one job fair and talk to the strata above the regionals, especially B5 and others that have specific events for military (try google VetsInBlue). In this market if you have competitive numbers then you can skip regionals unless you need PIC, and even certain majors like WN & NK have dropped those and long required type ratings. You are hitting the industry just right timing wise.
