I never said lessen the standards, you’re putting words in my mouth...but they really don’t need to know how much the stick shaker weighs either? Nor do they need to memorize the Captain flows...that’s just moronic. When I went through new-hire training almost a decade ago, I could do all the Captain flows yet never ran the De-ice checklist in the simulator. I had to wait for my first winter. You don’t see a problem with that?

Train smarter not harder.

I was one of these pilots. I took 14 years off of flying and came back to it. If we start training everybody the way that they need to be trained I’m sure the costs would skyrocket. When you come in realize that you’re not gonna be spoonfed everything. Have a positive attitude, keep trying, don’t blame shortcomings on other people, and above all else, look at the material. It’s all out there. As long as you are showing progression they are not going to send you home. My initial check ride was With someone who is three months senior to me. He is upgrading right now. There is no magic formula. You have to dive into the books and realize what it is you’re about to do and then be able to tell someone without hesitation what you’re about to do. I upgraded in May and I am still learning every trip.

Default Dumb Question

Forgive my vanity, but what kind of Ipad is issued?

I have an old ipad air2, 16g, with 2 states worth of data its maxed out, and limits its overall use. Ive waited to upgrade for reasons, financial and optimism (lottery - FO bonus).

Id like to be able to store more data on my pad. This is probably a dumb question. I should focus on making through indoc. Looking forward to joining the team and learning the culture.

Sincerely,
B

It’s a newer gen iPad. It’s the companies property, so I wouldn’t plan on using it for personal use. Just consider it a tool for your job.

What is the current timeline from systems to the sim? Is it still quite a few months?

For me, it was almost 3 weeks from systems to CPT observations (4 days), rolled straight into CPT (5 days), and have 9 days off until I start sims.

Got done with systems a few weeks ago and heading to observation next week then CPT. Sims scheduled in Phoenix towards the middle of October.

So I keep seeing the training timeline thing come up. I can say it will be approximately 5 months by the time I’m done which seems pretty standard across the board. I’ve seen people ***** about how the company needs to get it together but what they fail to understand is the company has to buy sim time and if sim slots are booked out almost two years that makes it a challenge.

Systems - guys do the homework and more so focus on the small quizzes and the ones on your E-learning. Those will be more than sufficient to get you through the test, it’s not rocket science so don’t beat your head. If you don’t understand something remember you have plenty of time to learn it on your own once they send you home and that is what I’ve been doing.

Flows, profiles, IAC and callouts - so I tried reinventing the wheel and doing things my way; it doesn’t work so I’ll make this simple. Some may laugh at me but I’m just sharing tips to study.

Make a ******* flashcard for EVERYTHING above and memorize them. My instructor literally drove me around the northern Virginia area and handed me the profile handout (which I kept ignoring because of fear) and this was the exercise he made me do while driving me around.

Read each profile 10 times aloud (as PF and PM because you’ll have to do both with your sim partner and this is a PIC type rating), then say it from memory. Every time you mess up, redo it. I did this for 3 hours and I had every profile memorized by the time he dropped me home.

Then I memorized the flows on my own without the cockpit poster and holy crap I knew exactly where to reach and what to touch when I finally sat in front of it and even incorporated my profiles into it and did an entire “flight.” It wasn’t perfect but I had the concept down. Same deal with the IAC, pretend an engine is bagged and do the profile then run the IAC and QRH then normal procedures. Do the flows for both CA and FO, they’re actually easier than you think. Memorize the flows (and triggers) first and then have someone ask you each flow then sit in front of your poster and practice.

Oh and same deal with limitations; flash card that stuff and have someone ask you random limitations questions. Maybe pile for ones you need to relook at and pass pile for the ones you did well on.

When you’re tired of flash cards pop open FTM V2, the QRH and PRM when you want and just read systems nice and slow. You will be amazed how everything ties together.

Buttons, use the online trainer because it is the company’s trainer. Again when you’re bored to death with flash cards press some buttons.

Wash, rinse and repeat! I wish I hadn’t wasted two weeks trying to figure this stuff out when it’s actually easier than our brains make it out to be.

Will post more after observation and CPT. Have fun everyone!

Spent almost 12 years at AWAC, from May 2004-February 2016. Most fun I’ve ever had working. Best training I’ve had in four airlines and where I learned how to be a pro. I hope it’s still that way and I hope it will be that way forever.

Keep making us ZW graduates proud when we hear the “Wisconsin” call sign on the radio.
