DAY LOA Bonus

Imagine having to provide an incentive for people to get $1500/month for captains to bid Dayton or first officers upgrade there. The reason why no one is bidding there for DAY is first, the lines are completely un-commutable. You have to travel a day prior and a day after even if you're the number one line holder there. That means if you have a 4-day trip, you'll have to spend 6 days total with your trip as well as commuting. If you add that up as a line holder for 4 trips, that's about 24 days out of the month for work-related activities. Also, there's nowhere around Dayton that is desirable to live. At least our former base in Columbia, SC had Charlotte and Charleston, which were about a 1hr and a half away. That was enough time for our 2-hour reserve call-out. The third reason why it's bad is that unlike the other bases, having a line in Dayton can look like a bunch of day trips, 2 two-day sequences, 1 three-day sequence with a day trip at the back end. It's efficient for the company, but not the pilot commuting there. If you want pilots to bid for Dayton, here are good options: give them commuter hotels, positive space flights to work, and paid moving expenses if you choose to live there. $1500/month is nothing for a Captain who is paying $800-1000 just on commuter hotels due to how the schedules are structured. Also, you just need 1 junior man to make $1500 with our 3x option to any normal credit day.

My understanding is the Union rejected this LOA, but I'm not 100% sure on that. The language in the LOA is garbage, hopefully the union actually steps up and says.... try again.

I don’t even think it applies to those that took the upgrade to Dayton, it’s a slap in the face to them. Then again the whole section of the contract that says the company shall build 4 day trips doesn’t apply to Dayton either.

you could live in Indianapolis and be less than 2 hours to Dayton.

They said desirable.

Just kidding. Yeah Indy is fine and with the low COL you can live pretty well on a regional captain salary. Cincy and Columbus are fine too, if you hop across the river into northern Kentucky property taxes are super low.

I think the bigger problem is when CAE was a base whiskey was the only option for people living in that area if you didn’t want to commute. We got a big influx of SC/GA people and a lot of people moved down there. DAY is also a domicile for PSA and is close enough to IND, CVG, and CMH that people could go to republic or endeavor.

I wonder about this. Everyone says “pick a regional where you can drive to work”

For years people have been fleeing the northeast to live in the southern states. Now SC doesn’t have a single regional based in the entire state. Having bases in the southeast would be a better recruiting tool then hiring bonuses

Eh, they'll just close it in a few years anyway. They pulled the rug out from RDU pretty fast when we had that one. We were looking at houses in CAE until that experiment blew up too. The big question is why they didn't just run a realignment to forcibly staff DAY CA positions. Can't spring for the moving expenses?

Because anytime there's a realignment, they don't want to carry the cost of offering free moving money if you stay with them for 12 months. I had the company pay 5k+ for moving expenses and 7 days paid off for my move.

they can’t force upgrades so if they force staff Dayton they will be pulling from other bases. This will just create shortage in other places

This is why displacements and TDYs exist but the company is choosing to ignore those parts of the contract to save money. Why do we even have a contract? They do crap like this all the time.
