Thank you Alaska, for a fantastically entertaining past few rides,

I have been doing some out of state travel on you guys as of late. Couple weeks ago you started strictly enforcing the new carry-on baggage size limits and it has been pure gold watching the Pax board. Watching them get pulled out just before they are getting their ticket scanned and lead to the sizer has been fantastic. Some of the folks further back in the line see the first sacrificial bags and start becoming concerned. Others are too engaged in their cell phones to care. The sherpa's hear this and some look a tad concerned. But most don't give a #@$%. You know the sherpas; the pax with the bulging ginormous carry on, the carry-on sized "purse" and back pack the size of a toddler. What do you mean these three bags cant go on? This is my purse. That is just a little backpack. My carry-on worked at Southwest!

At GEG a few days ago, the gate agents started walking around before boarding and having pax w/large bags come up to the sizer. Within 30 or so minutes they had a solid 20 bags already on the pile. Folks were livid, some hid by another gate, then scampered over just as their rows were called and tried boarding with their "plus size" bags tucked behind and on the opposite side of the gate agent. No go. Abort! They too were pulled off to the side by another agent and made to do the walk of shame to the sizer. When they'd get there they'd even try the old "hulk smash" trick. No good, onto the pile of bags this ridiclous behemoth would go; onto the airplane the grumpy pax would sulkily slink.

I love it. When I boarded last, there was a reasonable amount of baggage in the overhead; pax boarded and deplaned quickly..........and the reactions! Good lord I have never seen so many man/women children in my life. Reactions were from Douche-esque pushy old dudes, to tweeting millennial to, "this is illegal!." Good for you guys sticking to your guns! It's been flipping' hilarious!

We watched the same the other day in SAN, so I tried mine and it doesn’t fit either😂

Commuters Beware
 

They were jamming up commuters trying to get to work. This one flight attendant got off our flight and the gate agent had to go retrieve her bag so she could work the plane next door.



This is company issued bags. Very odd that we would do this to our own people especially commuters.

As far as Alaska Airlines is concerned no employees commute so no problems. And if you work for another airline...To bad, we dont care!!

Didn't mean to open a can of worms; just happy to see Alaska finally putting its foot down when it comes to the ridiculous boarding habits of the American flying public. Had no idea it also applied to employees; mea culpa.

It’s pretty obvious Alaska has started a not so covert war against commuters.

-JFK closure with no “bridging the gap help” ie positive space for a few months etc

-email sent saying do not let commuters onboard if they arrive less than 30 minutes prior to departure

-email sent saying that creating commutable trips isn’t economically viable, therefore Alaska has no interest in creating them

-same email sent saying that Alaska wants all employees to live in domicile

-and now some ludacris bag policy that applies to employees getting to and from work, knowing that all virgin issued bags are larger than their new requirement

I would venture to say that around AT LEAST 80 percent plus of VX people despise Alaska and pray for an acquisition of this dump.. and Alaska always has been the type to needs its a$$ kissed by prospective employees and current employees.. so when the ducks won’t fall in line, best course is to start shooting the rogue ducks that commute..

Its obvious you haven't researched the policies of your new employer. These tips may be a few years outdated, but try to follow along.

Did VX give you positive space when their only base was SFO? LAX? If you're a registered commuter, AS will give you unlimited D8Y passes which get you on board Space A before EVERYBODY (except Management), even active employees. Of course your E1Y code gets you aboard before everyone else as well. To top it off, YOU have priority for the cockpit jumpseat over everyone except the FAA.

This has been a policy forever. The list closes 30 minutes prior. Show up 29 minutes before push, you're out of luck. That policy has only been in effect for 15 years or so.

AS (or any other airline for that matter) is under no obligation to publish pairings for the convenience of a group of employees. You're choosing to commute. Long before the VX merger was on the horizon we had guys commuting from MIA, EWR, MEM, etc. Most of those were offline. You choose to live where you want, but if you want to stay in JFK, I suggest you get your Delta app in.

I have my own luggage, thanks for the advice. Doesn’t change the fact that one of your troll gate agents in SEA told me my luggage works (the normal size mind you, not the tall one) was too big and needed to be checked.

People like you are why Alaska is a joke of a place to work as a pilot.
