We need more new planes
The frequency of issues with the older Airbus are starting to create a pattern similar to although not as bad as the MD80's. We need to abandon the older used Airbus and keep buying new planes.

Good point. We aren’t losing the problem children to SWA, Alaska, United, AA and Delta. I can’t think of a single pilot or mechanic who has left who wasn’t good at their job and a good person with the exception of a notorious Mx controller. Still no idea how he got to SWA.

The planes aren't the big problem (with the exception of a couple admittedly) IMO. Management needs to pay our mechanics and provide the benefits to keep the good ones, many of which we have, but they tend to leave over time. Costs more to have a broken plane on the ground than the money it would take to keep our good mechanics here. So frustrating talking to a great mechanic that tells me he's leaving for SWA or Delta.

That email is very timely considering triple deuce just went down again for the smell today... Hopefully they get a handle on that one aircraft. I think Trip-3 is good now though, or at least I haven't heard anything lately.

222 was parked on 1 yesterday when we taxied by (out and in). APU was on the ground in the morning, aft end was buttoned up in the afternoon (but it was still there).

Looks like Spirit had a bad enough "smelly socks" issue yesterday that it caused a diversion.
And everybody over there, publicly at least, is scratching their heads as to what caused it... Suspicious 'smelly sock' odor causes Spirit flight to divert from Florida to Myrtle Beach | Daily Mail Online |

Also, Spirit is installing the Pall Bleed Air STC Filter that we signed up to start installing as well. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for them. I’ve talked to a Spirit guy who said they’ve had events in their brand new NEOs before. I did learn something new, however. I didn’t realize even with the APU Off, that oil could leak from it and get into the ECS. I always assumed it was blow back etc from the engine bearing seal getting into the Bleed Air. Interesting. |

I had an in-flight fume event with the APU MEL’d. It was deferred the day prior, as it had a fume event on the ground with the APU Bleed on.
On shutdown the IAE purges the fuel system and releases a bunch of vapor. If you put the APU bleed on immediately you will get some of that vapor into the cabin air system. If you wait about a minute after both engines are shut down before putting on the APU bleed then you will pretty much eliminate that issue. The other fun airbus fume issue is the filters in the a/c packs getting contaminated with engine oil from a bad seal. That stuf is super toxic. |
