The whole concept of LL to another base to cover trips is over-rated. It was a regular event years ago but now the company is far more concerned with on time performance and will run a 200% offer in base first. Repositioning planes, outstation recrews for a different base, out of base rescues may happen occasionally but not nearly as often as FL considering how small the TN/NC/SC bases are.

You must not be in Florida, or must be somewhat senior. I assure you that ground transportation is alive and well. I've seen people get put in a Lyft (not a limo, a Lyft) in PIE and sent to SAV! PIE-SFB, PIE-PGD, and PGD-FLL is extremely common for reserves.

As for the VFNs, it doesn't seem like the crazy ones with a LL and a ferry to an overnight get picked up anymore, since the union gave concessions on not getting paid for the trip dropped the next day due to legality. This has actually increased pressure on the reserves and increased ground deadhead.

You're talking out your arse. This was a decision made by an arbitrator not a negotiation by the union.

So am I understanding correctly that a 12-16 hour day with 8 hours of ground DH time is usual in Florida? Do those LLs to ferry usually end up with an overnight or another LL back to base? And what happens with the schedule for the next day?
Thanks for the help!

I’ve had days that long but not the norm. A more typical FL reserve call would be to reposition an empty plane to another base followed by a 2-4 hour LL ride home or fly empty to the outstation operate to another base and a 2-4 hr LL home. If you bid the R12, R14 or R15 shifts you’re more likely to have a rescue trip turn into a 2 day about 3-4 times a month. They usually give you the option if you ask and I always opt to take the hotel out of base at 4-5am and get home the next day vs getting home at 6-9am after a LL. I bid the early reserve now and my QOL has gone up some considering more than half of my calls now are just in base sick calls, open time drops or second half of a double re-crew. Picking up planes out of induction or heavy checks will usually be a 2 day and I still gets those trips occasionally even on the early shift. If you have a trip the next day, you’re pay protected and paid the higher of the two. If day 2 was your day off you’re given another day off and paid above guarantee.

That seems fairly reasonable, especially coming from a busy regional that abuses their reservists. At least they acknowledge you’re getting the short straw and compensate accordingly.

Don't come here expecting Delta, but your worst day here will still be better than your best day at a regional.

I don’t know if I can agree with this statement. I’ve had some great days but also when things fall apart I’d have to say it was worse than a good day at a regional.

You must have worked at quite a regional.
