I’ve never been New York based myself, but the first few thoughts crossing my mind is crowded, hectic, congested, stuck in traffic, stressful & high cost of living to name a few.
Thanks

I’ve spent most my career in NYC. Good seniority, good crews.
If you live there it is OK. Things you mentioned like cost of living, and traffic are tough. We used to have better flying to international destinations. Non stops to Caribbean islands are few and far between now. That was some good flying.
I would recommend PHL if you are going to be here for a long time. Better flying, one airport, cheaper living. Delaware is popular because of taxes and proximity. Pennsylvania is very rural westbound. Downtown Philly is trendy in places. The Jersey shore is not that far away. Really nice beaches.
Seniority is really starting to kick in now. 18 group 4 Captains retired last month. 266 Group 4 new Captains will be needed over the next year. Due to retirements and 22 new 787 airplanes. There are only 1000 group 4 Captain positions. 25% turnover in one year. You won’t feel that at the bottom for some time but it’s coming. (I got these stats off Facebook)
Now we just need to get a contract.

Crews were great, flying was just fine. Can't complain about those things. Good relative seniority to other bases was great too.

What I dont like about NY is the three airports. Get a crashpad near LGA? Great idea until all your trips are out of EWR. Land JFK, commute flight is out of LGA, heck thats what a 15 min drive? NEGATIVE, it can be 15-90 minutes. Call Kew Runner and dude doesnt show or some other issue. Got to get over to the Delta terminal when your flight lands at LGA, should be quick and easy, nope it seems to take forever.
Still it isnt that bad, an adventure as they say

love it!! It was/is the gravy train with biscuit wheels. I was so tempted to ride her till the end because of how good the sked is and the seniority. The drive has ruined me though. Training just rescheduled. 4 week paid vaca starting at 9am. working at AA has been a vacation every single month on the Brazilian Gambino

Yea. NY sucks for commuting. The only good thing about it is the relative seniority and that doesn’t even apply in all categories (320 ca phl is more junior).

I am leaving NY in jan because the seniority seems great on paper but if I spend all of it avoiding co terminals then is my seniority really all that great? IDK, I'll report back in a few months

Expensive, covering 3 airports. One of which is about 100$ in a Uber. Or 2-3 hours on trains/buses. The city is filthy. Especially where you'll have a crash pad near lga. The airports are hyper sensitive to weather and the delays that follow. So commuting is stressful. Traffic around LGA is terrible. Same with JFK so you'll enjoy sitting in it at seemingly any time of day. I'm just not a big city person so it was hell. Sounds from the streets feels like it never ends.

That explains why the latest trend of the E190 in PHL has been going so senior in the last few New Hire classes.
Someone mentioned earlier the E190 in PHL is a hidden gem the latest New Hires are just starting to discover as overall a pretty Good Deal with a lot of movement creating getting good schedules much faster, get to spend more nights at home with the family, for commuting purposes you Only have to worry about flying in&out of one (1) airport (PHL) vs being ping-ponged between three (3) airports in New York (LGA/EWR/JFK), not to mention all the other factors someone mentioned earlier Filty Crash Pad areas, Cost of transportation, 2-3 hr train/bus rides between airports, constant traffic, city congestion, $100 Uber rides, Noisy, Stressful commutes due to the structure of transporting between terminals & possibly ending in EWR/JFK when you commute flight is out of LGA missing your last flight.
I’m not going to lie, personally to me, all the moving parts involved in Commuting, not sure if you’ll make it/missing your flight to/from work due to traffic, delays, terminal swaps, shuttles running late etc is way more stressful than any of the actual flying.
Commuting is never fun and quite stressful in itself, but if I was given a choice I’d rather choose a less stressful commute than adding unnecessary stress to my life.
Wish people had told me this before I started. Sometimes we just have to learn the hard way.
