AA used to not overbook their flights as much as they do now.
They also protected first class much better in the past. Upgrades were not free and unlimited like today so it was common for coach to be full and first class would have upgrades and several non-revs sitting up there.
Thanks to drunken Dougie it is all profit before product now. I would be irritated as an elite customer as well because first class often gets sold to the lowest bidder during check-in. So first class will be full and the upgrade list has 30 platinum and golds.
Saw 40 non-revs the other day on a Vegas flight.

Plus AA used to only have elite upgrade status UPG1 UPG2 and UPG3s now they have UPG4 and 5s. Dont even know who they would be, probably credit card holders or some other scheme.

CRJ-900 and the 175 has 12 first class seats while the 319’s and 320’s have 8 or 12. What gives?! My frequent flyer buddy loves the 175 because of that. Single seat side and almost guaranteed upgrade for someone with status.
Oversolds showing on the non-rev sites aren’t always precise either. When there are miss connections sometimes they will show oversold when they put them on the next flight and takes a a bit to work through reroutes. They also probably know about other miss connections in which the previous missed connections can take instead. There’s also held seats for whatever reason such as deadheads and holding for weight and balance purposes.
