Cassablanca, Krakow and Tel Aviv.

Didn’t expect all that.

Wink 08-08-2019 01:01 AM

Was it officially announced? Or still just a rumor?

Surprise 08-08-2019 04:35 AM

It’s on jetnet.

I've been to Krakow.... great place to visit, but hard to believe it could support direct US flights....

I am surprised it DFW-TLV. Thought we might do JFK-TLV or PHL-TLV. Casablanca, I don't get that one.

Do you really think American could compete with 3 times weekly (what they’re offering out of DFW) out of JFK with twice daily Delta, El Al, twice daily United out of Newark plus El Al there?

nAAtive 08-08-2019 11:29 AM

Israel is interesting. Would have never thought we go back there after the TWA debacle.

It's a foothold in Africa for AA. Plus they already have a partnership with Royal Air Maroc for flights connecting in Casablanca. But DFW-TLV doesn't make much sense...I would have thought JFK or PHL for sure.

Royal Air Maroc is joining OneWorld in 2020.

Well, since we were doing TLV ( I think it was daily...don't remember) out of PHL and built a cold storage facility just for that route, then yeah.

LOT Polish Airlines ran that route for a couple years between the US on a 767 before privatization.

TWA had a good JFK-Cairo route. It ended on 9/11/2001.

Hope you enjoy your 72 hr. layover in Casablanca. Plenty to do in the Casba.:)

How'd that work out for them?

There are more Polish people in Chicago than Krakow, so maybe it will work.

LOT resumed the route a few years ago with a 787.

Kind of a doozy announcement, sorry.

Was expecting Oceania, more Asia, etc...stuff that requires more jets and pilots. Maybe its coming down the pipe.

Vasu said to expect a separate Oceania/Asia release at a later date in the interview.

This was before our time but there was a time in the 80's when AA was firing on all cylinders. Seemed like every year they were announcing a major order for new (not replacement) aircraft.

I mean this announcement is cool and all but doesn't really seem to do a lot for hiring. I think that was all his point is.

But, still cool. I really hope these destinations stick. More successful destinations and they might start ordering more aircraft. Who knows. Doug hasn't presided over an expanding airline, really, ever. From CEO at AWA just prior to 9/11, he's had a rough two decades.

Yea but in this day and age with JVs, codeshares, trumps recent support of the me3, rapid domestic ulcc expansion, etc its good for us to really just hang on to what we have. It could be so much worse.

Csy Mon 08-09-2019 06:06 PM

Tel Aviv is a great layover: Hotels on the beach, fine restaurants, night clubs, friendly locals, etc.
It went senior with Tower Air, my previous gig..

I definitely agree we can't be greedy.

A rough two decades?! He holds about $80 million in AA stock and runs one of the largest airlines in the world. I wish my idea of a rough 20 years was only 80 mill

To Doug building "his" airline is a personal goal. Money is good yes but building his empire thru the airline and putting his flag on the map is even more important. IMO.

AAL24 08-10-2019 02:02 PM

Either way no matter what happens to AA he’s going to ride off into the sunset with 70+ million. Contrast that with the 30,000 airline pilots who had their pensions wiped out. They had “a rough two decades”. The executive level of airline management has been absolutely killing it during the last 20 years.

Look at the historical gap between top captain pay and VP and above compensation. It has been increasing exponentially since 2000.

We had it at TWA, as well; the problem was, it was a low-yield route, like Hawaii was. No one pays full fare to go there.

Not the case these days. Yes it gets a lot of tourists. But the tech, defense, and bio/pharm industries pay for a lot of business class seats to/from TLV. Also a lot of wealthy tourists.

bigscrillywilli 11-02-2019 03:06 PM

Makes me wonder if they’re going to start Philly back up again. Fingers crossed.

That would be ‘Casbah’. You can Rock the Casbah.

And remember, for special friends of Rick, there is a special price-just for you, my friend.

You made my morning. A quintessential 80’s song and one of my favorite movies. Thank you for that!
