So I am currently BOS based with the other major airline with a Boston domicile. I live up here but relocated to live in base. I'm interviewing in Dallas with AA in the near future and am trying to get a sense of the odds of getting BOS if I get a CJO from AA and decided to take it. Seems like Boston drops to new hires only a couple of times a year but I understand the seat lock is short unless you get withheld. I'm sub-30 years old so I assume I'll get the 190 if I find myself lucky enough to be in an AA newhire class and understand if that happens I should plan to be withheld in PHL for sometime? I did hear they are reducing the fleet this Fall so any guess if that will cause a 190 drop drought for a little while?

I'm thinking for either my current job or AA I will eventually move to base in South Florida to relocate near in-laws for my wife and kid. My question is this, is Boston worth trying to get to with AA or is it so small and so senior I'd be better off shooting for MIA ASAP and hopefully enjoy much quicker movement down there?

I know I have to get the AA CJO first but in the mean time the wife and I are looking to start discussing what we want and where we want to be both short term and long term. I wouldn't mind staying up in New England for a few more years but if my career prospects would be much better much sooner in South Florida I would bid for MIA ASAP and move down south and not look back.

Wanting to live in MIA is a good problem to have, because it’s jr. The jr BOS FO is currently a late May 2019 hire, will be a July 2019 hire as of December 2019. I don’t think the 190 is likely for you, but who knows. What I’d do is aim for a 737 in LGA if you can swing it and hopefully you’ll be able to get BOS within 6 months, but BOS LGA is not a bad commute at all in the mean time. You need to avoid the Airbus though since no base in BOS.


But yes, MIA will offer you a much better career in terms of QOL and money, so if you’re kid is young, and you know you want to live there anyway, I’d pull the trigger sooner than later.

Thanks for the breakdown on BOS vs MIA and the luck PRS!

Our kid is <6 months old so no friends or in school yet. Sounds like if I am lucky enough to get and accept a CJO I should just shoot for MIA right away if I don’t get it on the initial drop since I can get there on the either the 737 or A320 pretty much instantly? The possibility of widebody flying down the road out of MIA is also very appealing.

If you live in bos then LGA would be a super easy commute. Between the 3 airlines there’s probably 30 flights a day.

190 wouldn’t be bad either bc out of all the overnights probably 25% or more are in bos. Plus tons of trips that begin and end with deadheads to/from bos.

Good point about the BOS-LGA commute. I think if we felt the need to stay in New England having LGA as a super easy commute option would make up for BOS being smaller and open up a lot of variety. But since family will most likely dictate a move to South Florida eventually and it’s so junior at AA I’m thinking that’s what I should shoot for early on.

If I got the 190 and get withheld at least like you said, BOS would probably be a great city to commute from for various reasons. Let me know if I’m missing anything obvious here and thanks for all the input!

You would be able to hold wide body f/o in MIA within 5 years, I’m guessing. BOS won’t have that option, although JFK is about the same as MIA for seniority. The commute can get tough in weather, though. Living in base, especially with a young child, is, as they say, priceless.

So true about living in base. Professionally speaking, the combination of widebody FO and driving to work would be the biggest draw for me to MIA. I like having the option of staying near BOS because I really am liking the town we are living in but ultimately I think if I wanted the same opportunities I could get out of MIA it would mean a NYC commute from BOS.

If 5 years to Wide body FO holds true in MIA I can’t see how I can pass that up if the wife and in-laws continue to want to relocate to South Florida.

Holiday Inn Express in Saugus. I think the crew rate is $79 plus tax. It also has a shuttle. It's not available all the time but you can call and see when it is available.
