AA simulator instructor

Any gouge on the AA sim instructor job? I see they have a job posted. It doesn't specify requirements to hold any type rating in any given aircraft. Do these jobs come with a seniority number and the ability to transition to the line if desired in the future? Not a lot of info in the job post besides hours requirement. Thanks

Sim instructors are union represented thus you’ll have a seniority number for bidding. Transitioning to line flying is always a possibility but you’ll start over as a new hire on the pilot seniority list

Couple of details that I have come by from the AA 737 guys who use CAE’s sims.
- pay is very low....50K to start IIRC
- being a sim IP gets you no advantage or special consideration for moving to mainline to fly.
- As an IP.....you would be required to be typed in the particular aircraft you would teach. That’s an FAA thing.

Good luck and let’s us know how it goes

If flying for a legacy is your primary goal, you are better off with ANY flying job. A sim instructor job will not help your chances getting hired and will actually slow you down with building competitive credentials.

Starting pay is around mid $60k range. The requirements don't state a TR required but everyone hired is typed in something from what I've seen. A type in an AA operated type is not necessarily required. You're gonna go through the same training a line Captain would anyway, including the type ride. Schedule isn't bad and there is generally a decent amount of OT for those who want make more $$. Top of scale is not too bad with some guys who work a lot of OT making well over $200k. One CLT Sim Instructor went over to line flying not too long ago, but as mentioned above he started over at the bottom of the APA list since the unions are different. There have been rumblings that APA want to bring the Sim Instructors into APA (mainly to allow retired guys who become instructors to keep their seniority It seems.). That is going to be an uphill battle for APA and I haven't heard anything about it for several months, but if it ever happened I'm sure the seniority thing would have to work both ways. I don't see it ever happening but it HAS apparently been mentioned in Dallas. Feel free to PM if you want more details.

This is incorrect. There is no “transition” available at all from ip to line pilot.

Yes I agree. I’m sorry if my choice of words was misleading. By “transition”, I mean you will interview, go through new hire training, and start over on the pilots’ system seniority list.

Latest word is hiring an E190 SimP for CLT and looking at bringing new hires in at year 3 pay which would be low $80s with a 17 day schedule. (The contract allows for them to do this and it automatically brings anyone making less than year 3 rates to that rate.)

AA Simuator Instructor Pay

I heard from a friend at AA the starting pay is in the $87,000 range now

That would be about right if they are bringing people in at 3rd year pay when you add in holidays and other little extras.
