Breath through fabric if there are fumes right before/during/after engine start up. That is all we can do if flying D/H or commuting.. Any opinion?

Those aren't the same fumes.

I haven’t heard of one happening in a while. Any chance they have found and fixed the issue? What support did the company provide those that went out on medical because of it? Wondering if they are having to live under our LTD.

Or buy this for time spent traveling in the cabin:

https://respro.com/store/product/techno-mask

They have a multitude of different masks but you want the Techno mask for filtering gases.

I just ordered three and will have mine readily available when DHing or commuting. I also ordered extras for when my family travels and will insist that they have it out and ready to don in the event of a fume event.

Myself and my entire crew landed in the ER this summer thanks to an on the ground fume event and of course subsequently I’ve done a lot of research and reading on the subject. Downright frightening how badly TCP (the neurotoxin in question) can #+*^ you up.

B737NG. Wet sock smell after first engine start. Whole crew got sick including an airport responder.

FAs/cabin got it worse than us upfront. A couple of them were out on long-term leave. One has since passed away although not necessarily because of the fume event.

Honestly people, we as a profession need to wake the hell up about how bad this stuff is. At the very least, please inform yourselves enough to recognize it when it’s happening.

I was a lot less informed about this topic back then but fortunately knew enough about it to recognize it and take action.

It's happened on several fleets Boeing and Airbus. Airbus slightly more occurences.

Emb 145 used to have wet sock smell from packs all the time. No one ever got sick. What's the difference with airbus and boeing?

Same on the CRJ. It was the water separator IIRC.

There are several sources of contaminated air. Fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluid. Why there isn't a sniffer detector with an auto pack trip by now I do not know. Part of the problem is getting the industry (and Airbus/Boeing) to admit there is a problem, as that would bring very large class action suits...anyone and their brother would sign up even if no event had been reported...so it's kinda a tightrope walk.

Stuff is starting to happen in DC:
