AA Application Review Process
 

Quick question:

I want to apply to American but am 3 months short of finishing my bachelors degree.

Does anyone know if applications are reviewed only once a year?

The concern is that I apply now and my application gets shelved for a year because I did not yet receive the bachelors degree. If that was the case it would make sense to just wait 3 months until I receive the degree.

Any information or advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The WOPR will spit your app out once enough blocks are checked and there isn’t a glitch in the matrix. Without the BA/BS, that would be unlikely to happen, so I wouldn’t worry about it. Go ahead and apply, start updating at least every month, and get your BA/BS in there as soon as it is complete.

AA doesn’t require a degree.

I’m aware AA doesn’t require the degree, but it does increase my chances. So as I said, I don’t know if you only get your app looked at once a year or if they just look at them every month.

There is no computer system or algorithm that automatically picks the apps for them. They have about 6000 apps and they pick the apps manually based on their search terms from the database, again, the apps are not sorted by an algorithm that picks the candidates for them.

So, for example, if they were looking for all applicants with 1000+ hours 121PIC + more than 1 type rating + check airman, and you recently updated your app with the check airman qual, you will now appear in their search. It's not a once a year thing or anything. It's when you update based on their desired qualifications at the moment they hit the search button. They get to know a lot about you before that Video interview is event sent out.

I think 121 PIC time and/or the amount of type ratings you have or if you are military ranks the highest in their "search queries" for qualified applicants, including recency of flying. Having a degree does indeed help, but would by no means be what would determine if you're a competitive applicant. Most people just have them.

1. A new hire class in the last 12 months had a guy (indeed, ex-military) who had not flown in five years. I heard this from a sim instructor at the school house. AA is notoriously "flexible" with recency of experience due to all the non-flying Pilots sitting at desk jobs in the Pentagon. Indeed, flying 500 a year for the last 10 years is great, but how many folks are doing that.

2. "Degree not required". Good luck trying to get one without having one. Legend has it that a secretary of a VP had a Pilot son with no degree and he got hired. So, apparently "you don't need a degree"
