Default MIA base and neighborhoods

Hi everyone, I'm with another airline and transferring to MIA as soon as they open the base up again. I know nothing of the area, but would like to move there. Any recommendations on neighborhoods where flight crew tend to live? I'm thinking East of the airport and hear the neighborhoods of Downtown, Brickell, or Miami Beach. I'm a single middle-aged guy. I figure American Airlines is the 800 pound gorilla in Miami and you folks would know best. Thanks.

Most people prefer broward county. South Florida is a dump, you have anywhere else you can bid?

Been in South Florida since 2008. Most live in Aventura, Brickle, Dania, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood Beach, and Sunny Isles. Fort Lauderdale being the farthest, can take over an hour (I-95 SUCKS!)

HaHa, No, not really. Miami is the only place I can hold a line. And a line means $$$ and freedom.

I was looking at Fort Lauderdale myself, that was my biggest concern. Seems pretty hard to get a property on the water for anything even close to affordable in Miami.

If you’re looking for a house near the beach start looking further north. I live a few blocks from the beach in north Florida and I’ve looked at comparables in south Florida. You’re looking at 2-3x the price for the location. About as far north as Melbourne is where you’ll have to look to find something nice within 5 blocks of the beach for less than $750,000. Once you hit south Florida you’ll be looking at 1-1.5M for something similar.

Are you looking to rent or buy? If you’re looking to rent it’s not hard to find a nice condo on the water for under $2,000. Hallandale Beach and Hollywood would be your best bet. Sunny Isles you’re looking at 3,000 and up. Hollywood Beach has a nice boardwalk with a lot of food options. That entire area gets busy during the high season (Nov-May) when all the snowbirds come down.

I-95 does indeed suck, but a lot of it depends on time of day. Fort Lauderdale to the MIA employee lot can be as short as 25 minutes or as long as a couple hours, just depends on accidents. Sunpass for the express lanes is a must.

What do you mean by “on the water”? Renting a highrise condo near the beach with a view of the ocean is very different than purchasing a house with a dock on a canal connected to the intercoastal.

Don’t forget there’s a train that goes from
FLL to MIA. Makes the commute time pretty consistent.

I'm looking to rent before I buy just to be sure I like the area I decide on. Sounds like I-95 is to be avoided at all costs (good to know - thanks!). Wow, 3/4M to be five blocks away from the beach and still a monster drive to MIA sounds awful.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I've got enough to start zeroing in on some neighborhoods.

Much obliged.
