ZTL vs Furloughed

Just read through the info on APA, and it makes no distinction between folks who took a Zero or Alternating Zero Time Line in lieu of furlough and furloughed pilots. Is the intent to pay the PSP to all pilots not fully employed as of Dec 1?

The PSP2 requires airlines to recall, (with back pay to December 1), all *FURLOUGHED* employees. ZTL and Alternate Month Line pilots were not furloughed.

Those pilots have remained employees of American Airlines, they have been paid pursuant to the deal that they accepted, and they have continued to accrue company longevity, vacation, sick time, 401(k) contributions, and healthcare benefits.

They voluntarily accepted the company’s offer for a “cost-saving” alternate method of scheduling. As I seem to recall, the deals that they accepted were good through May, 2021 and unless the company finds it to be in the company’s best interest, I seriously doubt that the company is now going to allow those pilots to back out of the cost-saving deal that they voluntarily agreed to. Additionally, I’m quite sure that the PSP2 does not address it.

Yes, I realize that the ZTLs and Alt Month Schedules were offered in an effort to “mitigate furloughs” but I don’t foresee AA management being in a giving mood, when it comes to rescinding these cost-saving measures.

LOA 20-005

A. GENERALPROVISIONS
1. The voluntary reduced schedule options created herein shall be implemented during the October 2020 contractual month and shall remain in place through the May 2021 contractual month, under the terms described below, unless otherwise agreed upon by the Parties; provided, however, that the implementation of this agreement will be tolled in the event that the Company is prohibited from engaging in furloughs by Congressional act.

I’m pretty sure that the company is gonna have to “toll” this agreement. Of course, this being 2020, who the heck knows what’s gonna happen

All of the furlough mitigation deals are null and void with PSPv2. If we had seen PSPv2 on Oct 1st, non of the ZTL and Alternating lines would have existed.

From what I read in the ambiguous memo yesterday everyone will be paid up to 74.5 hours for the month who was gut punched by apa as a “conditional group scum” need to know immediately before I pickup anything for jan. got the feeling the ztls are working for free if they didn’t break 74. but that’s still okay, glad to help the generous line holders have time off who gave us what trips they could.

Ugh.... what a goat-rope. I guess you guys won't get your "incentive" pay either if you don't full-fill your entire tour. APA has another three months to get their proverbial heads out from where the sun doesn't shine to strike a REAL furlough mitigation deal. I don't quite see demand coming back enough by April to all of a sudden need 1,300 people back on property on full pay. Kimball's ambiguous message said, "Team members will be returning to work in phases based on operational need. The first group being asked to return to work will receive their recall notices soon in accordance with their JCBA. We expect to continue to return employees to work in April and throughout 2021.".

ZTL/AMLs only stop in the event of government aid/end of LOA 1 June 2021. Since neither have happened yet, they continue.

Poor contract language.

Here's hoping the company does right by the ZTL/AMLS.

Latest bulletpoints from the pending LOA:
  • All pilots furloughed Oct. 1 or later were recalled effective Dec. 22.
  • All pilots being recalled and pilots on a Zero Line or Alternating Month Schedule status will be pay protected to 74.5 hours this month and in January.
  • Each furloughed pilot will be returned to his or her pre-furlough pay status (active, LTD, military leave, etc.). Bid statuses will be finalized when each pilot returns to active flying, which will be done in seniority order.
  • Any furloughed pilot who cannot return at this time can elect to take an unpaid Voluntary Extended Leave of Absence for up to 36 months. Pilots continue to accrue length of service while on a VELOA.
  • Pilots who prefer a VELOA over returning from furlough must notify the Company by Jan. 4.
