Default Seniority Comparison

Quick question for the masses. Wife and I are aiming for PHX as the forever domicile to be near family.

I've read the forums on here comparing AA & SWA overall but it's hard to guage how that would look at Sky Harbor. It seems like AA is a relatively senior base while SWA is more junior and has a larger presence? Is the rapid seniority gain a wash at this location or does it still win out?

Anything else to consider when comparing the two at this hub? (besides aircraft type obviously). All assuming I'd be lucky enough to get a call at either. Thanks guys.

AA at PHX is senior as it is the former main Hub of America West Airlines. America West had its main hub in Phoenix and at one time a smaller hub in Vegas and it experimented with one in Columbus Ohio in the 90's. America West merged with US Airways in 2005, and then there was the US AA merger in 2014. The folks there in PHX are well settled in that community and don't want to move so it is likely to stay senior for a while, at least another decade.

Just curious, what makes you say that SWA is bigger in PHX than AA? In 2019 AA accounted for 46% of PHX total capacity, making it the largest carrier. Not sure how the numbers look in the recovery, do you?

Isn’t the SWA crew base bigger? That’s what matters. AA keeps shrinking there in term of crews.

As Rick suggested, send it to someone on the Pilot Recruitment Team. Ask them to send a note in to request an update on APC AA page. See if that will work.

Rick: “Got tired of doing that years ago. It seems to be driven from the airline end, who are in many cases advertising customers... see where I'm going with that? Try talking to your pilot recruitment team, if the APC profile is out of date, that impacts their job.”

Tough call. If you have a choice and you want diversity then AA. If you want stability then SWA. At AA Phoenix will get less senior as time goes by. Not great diversity of flying in Phoenix at AA. No Europe or Asia. Perhaps live in DFW and visit family in Phoenix. Personally I would be bored with one type plane to fly but some don’t care at all.
