I don’t know. Never really given that much thought. I’d venture a guess and say they would face opposition as well. Both are profitable, domestic leisure focused carriers. (Domestic leisure sector is the strongest of the aviation industry today). They would have a very difficult time making a compelling argument that their viability is in danger. Both offer much needed downward pressure on fares in many key markets. I don’t see them merging either. But again that’s just my .02.

I don’t doubt that. I’m just speaking for AA pilots and the possibility of any future mergers. AA pilots have been through more integrations than I care to list. And this pilot group is collectively over it. Plus with all the mandatory retirements occurring now and going forward, I personally want that wave being ridden by AA pilots only.

hopefully the doj canning this deal doesn’t make our companies try and merge.

This was my thought exactly. The NEA actually took away benefits of merging. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free. At least the DOJ is not showing a willingness to allow collaboration. Hopefully that signals to everyone to not even think about trying to merge.

“Earlier this year, the DOT finished its thorough review of the NEA and concluded it had the potential to increase competition, allowing the airlines to move forward with the partnership with additional safeguards in place to ensure growth and competition in the Northeast.

We want to be clear: American and JetBlue are – and will remain – independent airlines. We do not intend to merge.

What we will do is continue to deliver on the promise of growth. This winter, the NEA will offer more than 700 daily flights from New York and Boston and continue investment to provide a seamless travel experience to customers. We look forward to rebutting the DOJ’s claims and proving the clear benefits the alliance brings to our team members and consumers in New York and Boston.”

Everyone should try to read the 42-page brief put out by the DOJ - tons of insight in there. The language they use is so strong in some sections about just this alliance that there’s no way they’d approve a merger.

Merger. Aren't you guys 60+Billion in debt? I'd say it be more like a fire sale at AA.

DOJs’ case is getting stronger. AA announced 27 routes being cut in NY and the NE. Shuttle is shutting down. Can’t even fly from NY to Boston on AA anymore. All flying will now be handled by Jetblue.
