Offline Jumpseat
I was Jumpseating to work ( ups pilot ) on a RJ with a connection. I was issued a vallet tag for my like everyone else. When I left my bad at the bottom of the stairs the GSA freaked out and said it was too big ( packed for a 12 day international trip ). After introducing myself to the captain I took my seat and the agent came to me and said she checked my bag to SDF….. I had a connection in CLT. What if I couldn’t get on? Is this standard practice or I wonder if it’s just this station. Oh she told me if I want to Jumpseat with them I needed to buy a smaller bag. Either way if you decide to catch a ride on us feel free to bring a big bag and as much stuff as you want. Thanks!

Apparently it's their weight and balance program they use. So your guess is as good as mine.
I don't fly for AA or their wholly owned

Apparently this is a PSA thing. Some of my coworkers mentioned today that if you're crew and commuting on PSA then you have to yellow tag your bag (gate check it). Doesn't make sense for the reason you brought up.

All that said I’ve never heard of a bag being too big to be valeted. I would imagine this comes from the ground crew. Also not a PSA thing as the rampers in both CLT and SDF are piedmont.

The WB “program” is why the bags need to be put underneath the plane. It’s not a PSA thing it’s a CRJ thing.

I suspect this is a similar situation.

Right after the merger there was some trouble with bags for commuters being valeted if you were going to an AA station. Example: CLT-BOS. CLT was an Airways station and BOS AA. I'm not sure if it was contractual or not but the AA rampers refused to bring crew valeted bags up to the plane.
I suspect this is a similar situation.

The only people allowed to have rollaboards in the overhead area the crew working the flight. Everyone else has to gate check it. As for the bag being checked through to the destination baggage claim, I've never seen that before and was most likely a one off at that specific station. It would be a Piedmont/Envoy deal depending on which company works that operation. Not a PSA restriction.

I’m sure this depends on the RJ carrier, I’ve commuted on CRJs dozens of times with crew roller (that just fits) and never had an issue putting it above.
this wasn’t the posters issue however, it was that it was checked instead of valet-ed. I mean the forward cargo compartment can’t really accommodate a really large bag, but normal rollers shouldn’t be a problem and not sure what went wrong. . .
