In my request for the specifics of Arpey's departure I was trying to get to the facts. If we have an abnormal or emergency we can completely lose the battle if we apply the wrong corrective action (AF447) before understanding what we are dealing with. Instead of guessing at what is happening it is much better to take the time to get the information (and it will come out) and then pass judgement.
We can argue about whether or not Mr. Arpey was over compensated or bonuses were excessive or his retirement package is too rich, as those are subjective judgements, but in the end I think he was true to his convictions and he departed rather than participate in something he viewed as wrong. I call that a moral man.

It is an interesting opinion piece. And while Arpey appears have some moral reasons for doing what he did, the thread title is still germane - he waltzed into another pretty sweet gig. He's not suffering.
I also think it's still worth keeping mind that he was at the helm of a failed and dysfunctional operation - one where all trust had been lost between the "leaders" and those hoping to be led. He asked (and received) for the employees to "give it up for the team" while managers were awarded bonuses. Failed leaders get removed all the time. Just ask Jack Del Rio or any Navy Captain who's ship has run aground. Arpey's ship had run aground a long time ago.
Glad to read that he's exited with a shred of decency, but that exit came at the end of many years of failed leadership.

I concur American floundered under Arpey's leadership and my evaluation is not meant to be a positive endorsement of his job performance. While at the helm the ship ran around and that will cause any ship's commander to be relieved.
Whether Arpey was effective or not, it is doubtful the rank and file would get behind a new plan from a failed leader, so if I were on the board I would have voted to recruit a new senior management team.
