Wish you guys the best.
Here are a few items from someone who has been through this. Since most of us have the T-Shirt, others should chime in on ways to make this a potentially smoother ride.

- Activate Lines of credit if already established. Sometime Airline Credit unions cancel them. Nice to have a cash cushion if necessary.
- Make copies of current benefits. Pension estimates, disability, etc
- Sick leave could be considered a liability to the company and wiped out. I don't believe that has happened, but don't expect guidance from the company on this issue.
- If you have a Plan "B", start dusting it off or getting recurrent if appropriate. It is almost a certainty that you won't need it, however, there is a peace of mind that you are being proactive in a worst case scenario. During this period in our history, the majority of calls to EAP were pilots that did not have a plan B and were along for the ride.
- I had no problem refinancing (from employer/income) perspective. May not be possible now due to home valuations, but attractive rates may lower payments substantially.
- Expect mangement to get raises and pensions, while they come after your hard earned contract.
- They will go after everything in your contract. They won't get it all
- You will survive this mess!
- They will blame you
- See above

I would just like to know how this is going to affect the new order for Airbus and Boeings...and the real question in my mind is "what is this going to do to my chances of getting on in the near future?". I've heard it before, but the truth is, if I am going to get shafted as an airline pilot, hell, why not at american? I'd like to get in on the first hiring wave if and when it does, but, how will the bankruptcy affect this? Are pilots going to jump ship now, or will they stay put as long as they can?

Jump ship and go WHERE?? If they remain until AMR exits Bankruptcy they have a chance to recoup SOME of their Looses when AMR re-distyributes some of their Gains in Exiting Bankruptcy. If they Don't then they have NO CLAIM Unless they were Forced to retire. This is a damgerous time and I'd suggest you guys familiarize yourselves with what the UAL and DAL piuots went through in CH-11

Not to worry, there won't be any AA hiring anytime soon. Likely a number of grounded planes, not furloughing, just not hiring. The new deliveries will just be replacements for at least 5 years. I see either scope relaxation or, more likely, a B-scale for the smaller equiptment. They'll won't call it B-scale, but the pay rates for 110-150 seaters will be just above RJs. Benefits and work rules will be greatly reduced via the BK judge.

While that's not exactly how I see it, that is how a large business or corporation can work/seem to function. As long as the failing business is allowed to continue, bailed out, etc, that's what will always happen. The business needs to fail and the assets siezed/sold to someone else, otherwise, they'll force everyone to take huge cuts in the hope of "saving the business", but really it just saves higher management's way of life.
