Volume dries up when day traders start to get nervous that a bankruptcy exit is imminent. That typically results in a cancellation of all current shares and if you're in the middle of a trade you're SOL.

That said, looking at the chart for the last 6 months, volume looks pretty consistent aside from random daily spikes.
