PHL AB is hurting for guys badly. Tons of open time, reserves are working their butts off. Goes for all domiciles really, lots of reserve transitions.

Sad...half of my class was supposed to go to the AB in philly. They all got displaced to E190 before they made it to training

Why sad? In a lot of ways they are lucky.

They'll have a much higher QOL this year. Long call quicker, secondary line quicker, primary line quicker, weekends off quicker. Most guys are then being held (at group two rates with the above QOL) for 3 to 9 months. At that point you can pretty much SAP anything you want and pick up/drop whatever you want in open time.

There are two major downsides to the 190, both thanks to this new contract and the crappy group 1 rates.

The first downside is timing your exit. You have to hope there is a permanent bid around your 1 year point. If not, it could cost you a few months of group 2 pay (roughly $42 per hour difference in year two!)

The second and probably biggest is that when the music stops, you don't want to stuck in the right seat (or left seat for that matter) of the 190, the pay difference is massive and a decade stuck there (it could happen) would cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. To me, this is the only reason not to bid it as a new hire.

I met an AA pilot who was hired last year born 1989, now that is impressive!

Huh? 20 a/c with 240 FO jobs?? 6600+ mandatory retirements in the next 10 years and you think guys are going to get stuck on the E190 for up to a decade?

I don't think he meant that...

I personally like the 190 and if it weren't for the low pay after year 1 and limited location I would stick around. You are correct though with your observations. Year one who really cares because the pay is all the same.

Of course hopefully we will know in the next year the long term fleet plan for the 190.

Could being the operative word here. No, it's not likely at all. However, talk to an LUS 89 hire or 99 hire about what their perceived career prospects were when they hired on. They were told, "you're getting on at a great time", "you'll be captains in five years" etc. after 911 the furloughs cut all the way to the 1989 hires and yes guys were stuck as F/O's for a quarter century. It's absolutely possible, doesn't affect you, since I think you're in the top 1000 at least. But it's a possibility for a new hire.

Think catastrophic aviation event, combined with raising the retirement age again, that's the scenario...

Well put. Always put in a few realistic "dream bids" just in case. Failing bidding 101 should not be an option. If you have any questions feel free to ask any of the guys you fly with and they most likely can give you good examples of where you could possibly end up with bidding.

Are most of the new AA FO's coming from flow through? From what I've been reading, the flood gates are open at DAL and UAL, but I really don't hear much from AA. Just curious.
