Default 20 MD-80s to ROW on 8/23

Heard from a buddy at AA that 20 MD-80s are headed to the bone yard tomorrow.

Did AA plan for that with bids and staffing? Or are people in line for a 3 month fall vacation?

If they launch 20 hopefully someone films it.

Or are 20 being removed from service and will be flown out over the next several days?

He said all 20 will be arriving in ROW on the same day (8/23) but no other details.

It's a several day process. Couple of flights a day.

All 20 arrive tomorrow. It's been planned for a while.

It's not that they are grounding planes early it's that they delayed aircraft retirements until after the summer schedule was finished (most kids went back to school today and the schedule has been reduced). The MD80 drawn has been reduced from its earlier projections so that they will actually have more 80s at the end of the year than the plan was early on.

Nothing to be alarmed about. It's all planned.

After the 20 depart, how many will be left. I seem to get a lot of MDs on my AA tickets.

Low 50s by the end of the year was last I heard. Will only be about 6% or so of our fleet.

The question then becomes how many 2200NM ETOPS RJs will be comin' in hot to replace them?

The Admiral is too busy fuming about other things to actually ask the question himself.

Just rode on one of the twenty to ORD. CNN was on board to document the event.
