I wonder if AA will go all 787, or if they'll eventually replace our aging 777s with the new 777-X variant(s). From my limited knowledge, I hear the 787 can't quite perform/earn the way a 777 can.
My long term hunch is the 777x is too expensive and even the 777 in general will be similar to the 747 in yesteryear. It's big and expensive. The 787 I think will take over for widebody service. But, I'm not a revenue or ops guru just a backseat driver.

Did the Dreamliner delivery schedule change in 2019 with the updated 76 Retirement schedule? Is AA trying to accelerate?

Latest I saw was 2 B-787s in 2019, 12 in 2020, 10 in 2022, and 25 in 2025.

I'd love to see a -10 order, but I'm still on the outside looking in.

While we're at it, how about a A220 order as well.

If there will ever be a 220 order at AA I'll be after y'all don't give away any scope during section 6. Hopefully the line is held or reeled in.

The -10 trades range for payload over the -9. It's the same (structurally) except stretched a dozen rows or so. Boeing also charges a lot for it. I don't have a route map with our longest flights on it but, especially with us canceling ORD China flying, it would seem the NMA would be a better fit with most of our route network. Keep the 78's for the long flights and cycle in the NMA as the 78's get long in the tooth come 2030.

I don't like using the word never but I don't see the 220 on property here ever. I would like to see some encouraging signs of 319s growing though if we can pick up domestic demand.

I'm more excited about a new 737. Composite fuselage and all electric including pressurization. Plugged in with ground power one could run the packs, almost no need to run an APU except for engine start.

Unless they go to a blended design the planes of the future will look a lot like the ones today.

Why not just go ahead and have an electric starter so the GPU could handle that too?

I don't think that would be a good idea.
  1. if you lose a gen in flight you are now single gen instead of starting up the APU
  2. unable to MEL a gen or component such as CSD
  3. an electric starter would pull a huge amp draw, think about your typical car battery rated for 500+ amps (12v) but has an alternator in the 150 amp range. You'd need to upgrade the ground power units to add either a battery or large capacitor.
  4. you could use a battery but that would then also add weight on the airplane
  5. if ground power is out you'd need a big GPU to handle the load
  6. shutdown off the gate, cheaper to run APU vs an engine
