Howdy,

Closing the final chapter on a 27 year AF career as a CSAR and Air Advisor Helo guy. Looking hard at employment back in the Pacific North West. Reading, and hearing about the hefty transition flow that is ongoing for RW guys. Have several fellow bubbas that have pulled this trigger, so many expectations regarding this option are managed (low pay, bottom feeder, upgrade times). Would love to hear from anyone on their experiences and perspectives recently or currently going through a RTP. thanks

I did it 4 years ago before the RTPs existed and before regional pay went up. Wife had a little income to offset my $20k a year. We made it work and have several kids. But I spent 18 months at a regional and a year on crap first year pay at JB, barely ok 2nd year pay at JB, and then ok 3rd year pay. First couple years in this job suck. But suck less now than a few years ago as pay and QOL has risen at regionals. 50-70k is doable year 1/2 at most regionals now I think, then when you upgrade it can go up some more. With your retirement itís livable. Know what youíre getting into and if it sounds appealing go for it. Check out the RTAG Facebook group. Lots of good info there on RTPs.

I love it. Between the bonus money Compass will front to the 141 school of your choice and the GI Bill, I didn't come out of pocket except for checkrides. Unlike the military with all their additional duties, here my job is to fly. And so far everyone I have flown with has been helpful, professional, but chill and laid back. I have no complaints.

Come on in, the water is nice.

There is a RTAG event going on in SAV next weekend. Some old APTAP'ers will be there as well.

Cheers,
G
