Feb 16. Ask anyone/everyone you know at SWA to submit a recommendation for you by Dec 31. The email about this is in their inbox...

I was told by a current WN employee that this one will be “entirely internal referrals”. I assume those of us who got a referral AND make it through whatever selection criteria is being used will receive an email sometime in January.
I pray I get to go- if so it’ll be my 3rd year in a row. Not sure why/how I keep getting to go to Career Expos but I can’t get an interview...
Oh well, I’ll be persistent. I know there’s plenty folks who’ve been trying for this job for many more years than I have.

Is there an open FO job window we have to apply for with the internal referral job fair?

There was not an open window during the internal referral period.

I think the previous expo had an open application window that opened shortly before the job fair, and I heard something about a second job posting that opened for expo attendees.

I attended the job fair last summer. The next morning I recieved an email asking me to apply to a window that was only available to job fair attendes.

Good luck!!

Job fair is very low stress. Tour of the headquarters, group QandA, one on one with a hiring person. Bring a couple of copies of your resume and wear a suit(NO FLAG TIES)! The company is selling you as much as you are selling yourself to the company. Be nice to everyone and be yourself. The one on one time with the member of the hiring team is a big deal. Good luck to all! Been a member of the family for a year and a half and it rocks! Job fair got me the interview!

Stay at the double tree if there are rooms available. Tell them you are there for SWA interview and they may give you the crew rate. That is where they put up recurrent pilots as well as checkairman for AQP.

I was hoping (probably foolishly) that SWA asking the pilot group for internal recs just for a job fair was perhaps a sign that the pool of super highly qualified candidates was starting to dry up a little... clearly not the case.

2 out of 8 I recommended got invited to the expo. Both are regional captains, one is LCA. All 8 I recommended are regional captains, half of them LCAs. There didn't seem to be a pattern why those particular 2 got picked. They were not standing out in any way, on the contrary, I was a bit surprised those 2 got picked (not that they are not qualified, but just not the most experienced out of the group). FWIW, I heard Rocky tell attendees at a previous job fair that this is what they're looking for when they screen applicants:

1. Flight experience - quality, not necessarily quantity.
2. Education - yes, a bachelors is not a listed hard requirement, but he all but said you will not get called without one. Are there exceptions? Probably, but they would be few and far, far between.
3. Leadership experience - this is where military has the leg up, but there are certainly opportunities for civilians.

We could probably only guess at the qualitative/quantitative value of each factor, but I got the distinct impression that they were looking at the whole person, and not just hiring guys who had passed a certain TT or PIC milestone. I'm a mil guy who has pretty good representation in each category and I got the job fair invite with under 2500TT.

I agree with the above statement. There are many people here with considerably more hours than me. One of the guys that recommended me also said they are looking at the whole package, not just hours and ratings.

I wonder if they look at the profile of those who submitted the recommendation. Maybe some weight is given to a person recommended by only three pilots but those three only recommended one person each versus someone recommending 5 or more. Looks like I am trying to see how many times I can say recommended in one sentence.

Was about 4-5 for me by time I got the offer. They do care about updating and reapplying. Each time a window opens the other apps get dumped. They don’t want to invite people and plan on them coming if they are already somewhere they want to be without plans of moving on, just waste manpower.

All of my 5300 hrs are 91/135. Previous 135 DO, CP and check airman experience. Clean record, degree, all that fun stuff. All of my previous applications with SWA show closed complete.
I'm not sure what sparked the invite, but I'm excited to go.

Be careful. The Krones are southwest. Or at least were. They know people. If one is an idiot during the prep, be sure they tell SWA. I’d avoid it. Have story ideas for the interview and just tell them as if you’re at the bar telling a fellow pilot...minus the curse words. I’m convinced my interview prep got me turned down the first time. Second time w no prep and I got the job. Fwiw

Why would you be an idiot during the prep (unless you are a idiot)! And if they really are SWA I will ask for their Servant Leadership guidance to support this humble Warrior Spirit future employee! ;)

In your first attempt, did you use them to prep for interview or job fair ... and if it was interview, what do you think it went south ...?:D thanks

Did not use them. Used emerald coast. This was many years ago. I think it went south because I literally had all answers scripted vs just ideas and then tell a story. But who knows. It doesn’t matter now but cost me a year of seniority.

Wasn’t required to apply or interview... just start class.

Hence the reason it took them so long to call I guess, lol. I didn’t have the type, but it didn’t stop me from applying. You could interview with out it. SWA paid for my 737 type rating when they finally hired me.

You don’t need any prep at all for the expo. A waste of money. Literally after the tours of the campus and speeches, you sit down for a few mins and they go over your pilot credentials and look for errors and advise you how to fix them. They take your resume and you’re on your way.

I didn’t use job prep for my interview and got it first time around. The best prep was talking with friends hired there and using their gouges for a guide. I had all of my real life experiences in my head and applied them where they fit in the HR portion.

The ticket specifically states that they don't recommend any preparation other than updating your pilot credentials and resume. I've spoken with a few SWA pilots who say that preparation is discouraged even for the actual interview. They just want to get to know the real you, not a memorized version of you.

This is anecdotal, but 100% of the guys in my interview group who got the call you are hoping for used a prep service. The three guys who didn’t get the call happened to forgo interview prep. While they might say they want to get the real you, if the real you comes off as disorganized or inarticulate, then they’ll hire the guy who makes a better impression.

Do not underestimate the importance of having someone who understands airline hiring practices vet your stories and help you put the best foot forward. It sucks that this is the way of the world now, but it’s the game you have to play.

Personally, I think the best information you can take away from this thread is to ask yourself who you are as a person. As the earlier poster mentioned, if you feel you may come off as sloppy and disorganized, you should think seriously about having a prep service help you out a bit with your presentation and delivery. Just make sure your still you, just a better polished and organized version of you. For a lot of people who are comfortable speaking about their past in front of a small panel, you’ll do fine. I elected to go with no prep service and got the call, but I can see it’s merit even if it’s just for the sake of calming your nerves a bit with a dress rehearsal. I think a lot of us here have been through a few interviews in our time so we know what kind of an interviewee we are. Some may just need to brush up on some gouge, some may need/want a little more prep. You are your best judge in that regard. Good luck to all of those in the pool, about to interview, and the folks going to the expo!

at6d
02-14-2019, 10:28 AM
I got prep for the panel interview, basically a practice session on how to structure stories. Stammering through an interview isn’t ideal!

That being said, I didn’t get the opportunity to tell a single dang story I’d practiced!

No prep on LOI—they can see through that. Robot canned responses on the 7 minute drill are not good. Don’t forget the debrief you conduct is a game changer.

Don’t get me wrong, I am DELIGHTED that the JA problem has been solved. I think the pendulum might have swung a little TOO far though. To the point that it’s tough to even add a day from TTGA or trade UP in ELITT.

I’m thankful that I usually do ok in round one, but I feel bad for the folks who rely on the ability to pick up an extra day or two a month.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

It's slowly getting better, but if the net zero in ELITT anything but zero in OAK, I wouldn't exactly call that normal. That said, it would be nice if it stayed around 5 or so, so you could routinely trade down if needed.

Both, supposedly.

Internal rec was required to get added to the pool of potential expo attendees, but considering they sifted through 2000+ applications and narrowed them down to 400, I'd say everyone at the expo was a potential hire barring something drastic. They also said they were hiring 520 this year and haven't hired a single person yet this year, so the math checks out with the 400 attendees.

The lack of hiring so far is due to the need for upgrades during the first part of this year, or so I remember.

December's class finished IOE early in February. December thru April they are only running one class of new hires per month. Not so much because of ETOPS, but to accommodate three upgrade classes per month during that same timeframe.

Could be why there's no invites/closed completes since yesterday:

Southwest Airlines suffered a computer outage early Friday that temporarily grounded flights across the country, adding to a string of flight woes at the airline this week.
Southwest had some issues with a computer system that automatically uploads flight plans to the Federal Aviation Administration, FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said.
The situation was resolved around 6:25 a.m. ET, he said.

For southwest is it possible to get hired as a 91/135 guy with no internal rec ?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Not a SWA pilot, but these guys can correct me if I’m wrong... internal recs mean nothing and carry no weight until you get an interview. At that point recs will be beneficial. However 2 of my 3 friends at SWA were hired with no internal recs at all. All 3 were 91/135.

This expo was the first of its kind where SWA used referrals to select attendees. Being an attendee does give you some really favorable odds at obtaining an interview; however, it not a guarantee. Many of us attendees are still waiting to see if we do get an interview.

Hope that helps.

Recs only matter once you reach the decision board. Use LinkedIn, you’ll be surprised to find people you know they work here.

As for 91/135, yes there are some in almost every class, no less desirable from my understanding, they like a diverse class between military 91/135 and 121

Hello all. I attended the most recent expo and was selected for an interview. The email was delivered to me two days ago with instructions to select an interview date via pilotcredentials. The website says "You are ready to be interviewed. Please select from the available interview times listed below". However, there are no interview dates to choose from. Is this something that will be updated as dates become available?

I'm still "received submission" as of morning of 2/23
Anyone else still sitting at “Received Submission” after Job Expo or am I alone and unafraid in the dark of night in the fog?

Based on the guidance at the Expo, I did not apply to the other opening. Hopefully that's the right call.

For those of you that received an interview from the application window after the in house job expo or other fairs ... roughly how long from submission to hearing back?

I am the same, along with my bud who went to the expo with me, still at received submission. According to rumors and conjecture they are not quite half way through the expo people yet, but who really knows.

I just went into the Southwest Careers website to check the status of mine, and it said:

"You have not submitted your profile to any jobs."

Anyone else ever see this? I had applied twice, and they were both there a few days ago.

There was a 10 minute one on one with an interview pilot. It was very casual. He didn’t really ask me anything we just went over my app. Whatever “assessment” he made was based on a very limited interaction. I took extra effort to make sure he knew why I loved SWA but it wasn’t because he asked me.

Curious about updating my application once it's in. My application status is still showing "Initial Review: Resume Review: In Progress." If I do an update on Pilot Credentials for my flight time & a new resume, does that make it over to the Southwest Careers page automatically or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks!

I guess the grass is greener in Delta!

So SWA is loosing pilots (not many but not 100% retained) ... they are planning a 450 new hire this year but they only got 100 out of the Expo ... and we are 1/2 way 2019 Q2 ... what's going on ... MAX 8 grounded can be one reason!

My understanding is that the first portion of the year was dedicated to upgrades and new hire classes will ramp up later. I imagine that at lease partially explains the low-ish numbers so far. They said they are planning 520 for the year though.

The main reason was that there were 3 upgrade classes per month since January. They were running 1 new hire class through March, April has had 2 already. This slowdown in new hire training was planned well before the MAX grounding. It will be interesting to see how much hiring continues this summer. I have a friend interviewing this week, so SWA is still hiring. I would also leave for Delta, if I lived in one of their bases. Commuting for an entire career would get old fast.

Happens everywhere. I had a friend leave SWA at year three to FEDEX. Had another leave American awaiting training to come to SWA, and another leave UPS after training to come to SWA. Pretty sure most will jump at the first offer, but when later faced with options do what’s best for them. Luckily, a lot of pilots have options at the moment, so can skip the career long commute, do that international flying, trade whiney pax for silent boxes, trade fast upgrades for perceived job security, etc.

People that went to the Feb expo are still interviewing...literally this week, last week, and into May. Not sure where you got the "only got 100" tidbit but it's a bit premature to say how successful, or not, the expo was.

That's why I was looking to update my application. I did an update on Pilot Credentials yesterday, but the careers site didn't let me do anything resembling an update. Hopefully they can pull straight from Pilot Credentials when the time comes.

All I’ve been doing on ICIMS (is that the careers website you’re talking about?) is just updating my resume with current hours. That’s really all I can see on there to do.

Edit: I just read your previous post. I believe I remember something about them saying at the expo that if your emails match on the careers page and PC then they will marry up and all the info will be there for them to see. Good luck!
