"It is with heavy hearts that we share with you that our Founder, Inspiration, Chairman Emeritus, and Friend, Herb Kelleher has passed away this morning at the age of 87. Herb is survived by his wife, Joan; three of their four children; many cherished grandchildren, and, of course, his pride and joy, YOU, the Employees of Southwest Airlines."

A true ICON of American aviation!

A man that knew the value of employees and used a cooperative attitude to make a great airline.

Sadly his sense of fairness is lost with him, as today's CEO's look to labor as a dreaded evil.

RIP Sir!

A pioneer, innovator, leader, an example and most of all... a gentleman.

May gentle winds be on your tail, and never a storm cloud on your journey... RIP HK

One of the beat Herb quotes ever:

A company is stronger if it is bound by love rather than by fear.

RIP knowing you did right.

Some people smoke until old age, some people smoke for a few years.

My grandmother died in her 80s and smoked like a chimney just like Herb. My mother died in her early 30s of lung cancer from smoking.

We hosted a football watching party today (go Cowboys!), and when the Herb Kelleher memorial "commercial" came on, we took a shot of Wild Turkey. Our guests were not aviation people, but they all had great respect for him.
Godspeed.

Awesome tribute.

I can't believe that I just heard today the Mr. Kelleher has passed. My top two airlines to work for were SWA and FDX. Never got to fly for SWA but I greatly admired the airline and their founder. What a legend. He and Fred Smith were personally invested in their companies and I think that is primarily why each of them were and continue to be so successful.

Sad news, RIP Mr. Kelleher. Condolences to both his personal and airline families.
