I felt safe in Lima, but that was many years ago, and it appears that caution is warranted in Peru, for a number of reasons:

Did Lima in November. Felt perfectly safe. Itís a huge city and felt we coulda done less days there. I wish we stayed in Cusco longer and Lima less. Actually, Aguascalientes at the base of Machu Picchu was amazing looking. Thereís a flight every few minutes between Lima and Cusco and it was dirt cheap even buying tickets the day prior on Latam.

Very cleverly disguised as a clutch.

I did something like outlined here https://www.machupicchutrek.net/hike-to-machu-picchu/inca-jungle-trek/ and it was awesome. I met some lifelong friends on that trip. I went solo.
Iíd recommend spending some time in Cusco, and also Arequipa. If you have the time, Colca Canyon is incredible to see and hike.
Enjoy!
