I've heard so many different stories about this....

Can I get a bit of a poll going as to which Chinese airlines allow or do not allow.... or don't allow but look the other way.... on the flight deck smoking during flight?

I'm not a smoker and would think in the small of a flight deck it could become an issue. I'm not opposed to it but would prefer to not have it allowed per airline SOP's.

Most allow it as far as I know. My airline certainly does, but it is the Captain who controls the ability to allow smoking or not. I am a Non smoker so No Go in my cockpit. Sometimes after landing I will leave and let the Copilots smoke with the windows open while I'm out talking to the girls.

Air China strictly prohibit smoking in the flight deck. They have even sent several emails to foreign captains reminding them not to permit smoking onboard.

BUT....this is China.

So of course there is smoking in the flight deck. Probably about one quarter of the crew smoke. Most of the time they will ask first or suggest "Captain, perhaps you need to go to the toilet"? Even the fleet manager smokes onboard!

But I have had several fire up and start puffing without even asking.

I had one FO plead with me to let him smoke when we were 30 miles out from YVR about to start the ILS after being in the air for 11 hours!!!!!

I usually did not care enroute as the cab fans in the 330 are awesome and a quick wee and return to the flight deck and the smell was gone.

And there was at least one small in flight fires as a result of smoking that I heard about!

They want to smokein flight? I say no promblem. Let them smoke in the designated area... the other side of their window.

I would just fight back and fart like a trooper!

They hate that more than we hate cig smoke!

Shenzhen allowed it but I didn't. Some of the FO's handled that better than others. I always told them they could go inside the terminal and smoke as much as they wanted after we landed and I would do the prep work for the next leg. It was nice to get rid of them for a while anyway.

Tianjin says no smoking, but most of the locals ignore that. As a nonsmoker, I put up with it when I have a check airman that wants to smoke, but otherwise they can smoke when we get on the ground and I leave the cockpit.

Some pax fired up the ganja on our flight back from Mexico today. Smelled great! I guess they had to get rid of it before they hit US customs. By the time I had the FAs track it down, they were finished and denied everything. Oh well, whatcha gunna do?

"Excuse me captain, do you mind if I burn one down?

". . . . .you gunna share that sh!t"?

Yep, that would make it a very different job!

My airline allows it and even changed the ops manual 6 months ago. These guys fire up after: every takeoff, turn on the ground, meal, top of decent...

My FO's are kind to me and generally don't smoke with me. If they ask I request them to light up on the ground, window open down wind. I just go into the terminal if there is a Starbucks and let them do everything.

The people are the nice part of the job. The other things can wear you down. Today I can see my shadow, so it's a special day :)
