I've been at NJA since '04. Two different planes, CA in both, initial cadre in one and I enjoy going to work.

At NJA you'll fly into places you'd not even thought about. From non-towered airports in the mountains, islands or low-land private runways in FL to West Texas then you'll land at ORD, MIA or JFK just like that. You'll be mid-flight at FL410 from MIA to TEB, empty and be diverted to HOU to recover a pax trip to TUS and RON. They flying is challenging and diverse.

You'll enjoy crappy crew food, but not often, or get a prime meal from some great vendors. You will love the medical care package, as well you family, and you can take that to the bank. You'll not like the 0400 show time day one and work a 14 hour first day of seven. But you'll enjoy going home a day early with pay when it happens. You'll enjoy the soft money flying around for you. You'll love the 59% 401k match come next month, but wish we had a defined contribution. Yes, you keep ALL of your points at the airlines, hotels, company AMX and fuel programs.

What you won't have is the ability to say you fly a very, very large plane around the world and spend chunks of off time seeing sites in far off lands. It's about choice, QOL, happy family, cared for family and much more. Pick one and roll with it. Go into it, Atlas or NJA, with open eyes, ears, mind and closed mouth, but don't look back.

It's aviation and crap happens, we all learn to embrace the suck and move forward. Best of fortune to you. Have fun with either and just enjoy the ride brother.
Pretty good summary.

You’re not a real pilot until you’ve flown single pilot night freight
Absolute BS and about as far away from ATLAS ops that you can get.
Thats really all we need, another single pilot in a crew environment.
Flying the 73 would be a good start.
73 > 76/74

I have been thinking about atlas for awhile and I am close to ATP mins. What is the deal with a guy like me going to Atlas? Don't hold back, again I just want good information.

The bottom line is that you’ve gotten into aviation at an opportune time, and quite possibly the last opportune time depending on how future technology shakes out.

The decision you make after you hit your “magic time” will be a crucial one. Ask yourself some questions, such as but not limited to:
1. What do you want out of your aviation career? Want to work at an ACMI like Atlas? Good for you, we’d be glad to have you.
2. Do you have a degree? No? Get one! Even if you want to work for an airline that doesn’t require one, you never know what the future holds.
3. Is time of the essence? If you’re a younger person I would say that the first 121, or 135 gig that you take should be the one that will get you TPIC the quickest. Is TPIC super important right now? Well, not as much as it used to be, but again you never know what the future holds. Check the TPIC and degree boxes as early in your career as possible. It’s easy to fall into a comfort zone and neglect it. Suddenly, 10 years from now, you’re rushing to get it done.
4. More so something to consider more than ask yourself. Companies like Ameriflight offer a lot of interesting opportunities for young pilots. It’s valuable experience and it will get you that TPIC relatively quick while giving you time to work on that degree if you haven’t already.

As for why you may want to pause on Atlas for the moment. To put it plainly you’d be doing yourself a favor building a “professional pilot” background before you get here. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying you’re not a professional. Im strictly referring to a 121 background or a 135 background from a well established carrier. Im sure you’ve heard of the “drinking from a fire hose” metaphor. Imagine yourself in the position where you’re learning how to fly a jet, how to work in a 121 environment, trying to learn how to fly a heavy jet, and trying to learn how to fly around the world all at the same time? Can you do it? Sure you can, I’m sure you’re sharp. But should you?

Cheers,
blink
