International Commuting at Atlas Air

Was hoping someone could answer this.

I’m contemplating the idea of going to work for Atlas and living in another country, Central America and Portugal are on the short list. It is my understanding that you can do this.

If anyone is commuting internationally, could you answer a couple questions. It is possible to not pay US Taxes, is it possible not to have part of your paycheck withheld for imputed income for the commute?

Thanks

Many people do this. You must pay US tax. You will not be gateway eligible and will have to get to and from your base on your own dime. However, once you arrive in the states they will buy you a ticket to your base. You may have some luck getting them to alternate travel you from home directly to base, but it’s completely their discretion.

I know of one who lives in NRT based in anchorage. Easy commute on a company jet. I know one in HKG, which would also make ANC easy. I know two living in Austria. They try to bid on work starting and ending in europe.

How many jump seats are available on the 747 or 767 - I'm assuming first come first serve for them?
Still, a hell of a commute…

if you lived in, say Australia, but based in LA.. you could do that but have to get yourself there on your dime?
What US Taxes would you pay, if you lived elsewhere?

On your own dime? I heard you could defer balance and use it to buy an international ticket.

If you are a US citizen living abroad you would still pay income tax on your income over $102,100 (based on the foreign earned income exclusion for 2017) which would also include any imputed income from company paid travel to/from your "gateway".

Sorry, but that is not correct.

And consult with a good ex-pat tax specialist. Taking tax advice in the crew room is a good way to get yourself into deep trouble.

^^ like I said some people work it out to get a ticket from their home to their base. However, it’s completely at the discretion of the travel department who still does not understand what “gateway travel” is (ONLY flights between your gateway airport and your base, not between any other two points. Period).

If you work for a US company you pay federal tax.

Living in oz and being based in LA would be a nightmare. Easy to get from the US to Aus but you would have to Jumpseat on United or go through Asia to get to LA.

Is commuting different on the 76 vs. 74? I heard 76 guys do not get home basing?

There is no home basing. CO buys you a ticket day before.

Good luck commuting to anywhere outside the US as a new hire. Schedules have been crazy lately and to no end in sight.

Also note. The company said it is going to drop gateway travel. So any ride to work would be on your own dime!
Domestic and international.
