Southern Air 737

I have an interview coming up with Southern Air for a 737 position. I have a few questions and I was wondering if someone would be able to answer them.

1. How many hours block does one fly a month? Can you break guarantee?

2. How long is a new hire expecting to sit reserve?

boeingdvr 01-10-2018 03:29 PM

I recently took a 737 FO on our JS from IAH to CVG.

After the exchange of pleasantries- the pilot said he was going on 17 days of night flying and had to JS back into CVG for more fun. No catering, no gateway, no hotels, no nothing.

I would say the 737 for southern has to be the worst flying job in aviation.

If a job is what you need. Go to eagle, or PSA get a flow through, and hey- you may even find the occasional FA to keep you warm.

Never ever!

You will be on reserve and a line call it composite line

I was there for 2 years before Atlas bought it, Upgrade was 4 months, because S9 was going to bring 3 more airplanes.. now not sure.

good luck !but I quit that place and came back to fly my Regional and being based home.. you can beat that.

Good Luck!

737

About 35hrs in 18 days. No, you will never make over guarantee.

Recently, some 777 FOs have bid 737 Cpt. My opinion, they did so to the-hack their PIC recency block to more easily move on.

Do yourself a favor, chose ANY other airline.

Don’t do it.

The contract they work under is horrible. Way worse than the Atlas contract and it’s very bad. Just because Atlas & Polar are negotiating a contract doesn’t mean Southern will get one too. Apply elsewhere. You will not be happy. Did you even read their profile? It says in black & white you will not break guarantee. You have to have a crash pad.

Thank you so much guys. I’m trying to get my total time up as fast as possible. 35 hrs a month won’t cut it, even if it is in a 737.

Crazy Canuck 01-10-2018 09:25 PM

Yeah definitely go to a regional. Even at Atlas some guys are considering going back to a regional! With bonuses and quick upgrades you can almost make the same money...

Yea I’m at a regional right now flying turboprops, I can get about 100 hrs a month here. I was hoping for some Boeing time. But if the QOL is that poor then it isn’t worth it.

If you want some 73 time consider one of the 121 supps: Miami Air, Swift, Xtra.

Triggs 01-11-2018 04:11 PM

pretty sure the $$ is better than Southern for flying a 737. You will be gone just about as much, but at least it's not dead of the night flying

I talked to a pilot from Swift recently. He said he left to go to a much better flying job, which was not a major (and not a regional).

Western Global is worth a look. Worldwide Home Basing, and if you want Boeing you may be able to get the 747. It may be better than the above places for you.

WG is definitely a LOT better than the Southern 737, for almost all pilots.

Namaste...

WGA is not hiring for the 747 for the foreseeable future....until they are hiring for the 747. Don't count on getting the whale. The MD-11 is the machine in most need of crews. they just got 2 more MD's for a fleet of 17+ MD-11's. A growing company that beats flying for Southern hands down. :D

I would think an MD-11 type would really help for FedEx and UPS. I would also think it would help for Delta and American. After a few years you could bid over and now you've got MD and Boeing experience.

You cant switch between the two. once your on the md11, you are always on the md11.

True, but makes no difference if you are just punching your ticket to one of the big 5.

If I could get typed in both it'd help that...

No one cares if you’re typed on MD11 vs 747. Heavy international jet time is just that.

How did this thread become a Western Global discussion? Focus! Focus!

Lol, they would keep a lot more people at wga, and also keep them happier as well if the made it you can only fly the 747 after flying the md11. Everyone wants to fly the 747, no one knows what a md11 is.

It became a WG thread because a CFI with 1500 hours is better off at any regional than Southern. Southern is a dead end job that doesn't pay enough unless you live in CVG with no family and can afford to live in your parents basement for 8 years waiting on a real job offer...... Or Envoy is hiring.

Ok. I won’t disagree, but there are at least 3 dedicated WG threads on this board. Why continue contributing to the thread drift and create another?

So does towing banners at the beach. There are girls in bikinis there 10 months a year too. I'd rather do that than work at Southern.
