The unions were ordered to hand over a joint seniority list by mid May. After that “9 months” of negotiations will take place. After that, the union and company will have to pick an arbitrator and get on said arbitrators schedule. Then, the arbitrator can take as long as they like to decide on what the rest of our contract will look like.

I’m not here to be negative, but take a realistic look at the industry. Rumor is that atlas received 650 new applications in a single day. No one else is hiring. Our new contract will, for a large part, be decided by an arbitrator who only has the authority to chose the language that is already present in either the southern or atlas CBAs. The company will not be under any pressure to make many meaningful improvements to our next CBA, because where else are you going to go? Certainly don’t expect scope to improve, which means that our next CBA also has a chance of being arbitrated. Just like this one was. Just like the last one was.

It gets super political in debate. I think that 2021 for an arbitrated contract looks likely. Last time the arbitrator gave us a high pay rate but poor work rules. The big question mark is how much gets TA before arbitration and how seniority integration will go.

I'm hopeful for a decent pay rate. Pessimistic about retirement and disability. There are plenty who would disagree.

"No one else is hiring"....ABX has 6 new hires in class now...supposed to keep hiring till peak. Pretty sure ATI does also. Maybe K4 although like everyone there is a big pool.

I think ATI has paused their interviews for now though

IMO 2021 is optimistic. I expect the company to repeat the Atlas/Polar amalgamation playbook. Then, Atlas chose to walk away from “negotiations” for a whole year, as they took advantage of the fact that the 9 months isn’t binding. That delay plus 9 months and the time the arbitrator took to render his decisions chewed up 2.5 years. If they remain true to form it’ll be the end of 2022 before we see a CBA. They use 6 to 7 years of dragging it out to let inflation eat up whatever pay raise we get, making it a near zero sum gain. Last time we gave up most of our profit sharing and took other concessions to get Atlas pilots a 14% raise totaling 21% over 5 years. Polar got more but lost all their great work rules. Flynn even crowed to the investors at the time saying his pilot costs only went up by 7 million. A lot of pilots here saw their W-2’s actually decrease post amalgamation as the era of 30k profit sharing checks was over.

The arbitrator didn’t decide anything economic last time, all he got was Scope, picket line language and another article I don’t recall. He ruled for the company almost totally on those articles. I don’t see the union taking their chances with the arbitrator on pay this time either, the company would probably ask the arbitrator to make us work at flight instructor wages.

As pointed out above there are three types of reserve. R1 is home reserve with no pay credit. If Scheduling calls you between 7am and noon in your home time zone, you have to be able to depart from your gateway airport within 5 hours. From noon till 7am you have to be able to leave within 10 hours so if they haven’t called by noon you’re safe till the next day unless a company plane is going through your gateway airport in the middle of the night. R2 is the closest to normal airline reserve. You’re in your base or “other location that is mutually agreeable.” You’re on trip rig and collecting per diem. However per IRS rules if you’re in your base your per diem is taxed and Atlas used to tax your hotel room as the IRS considers it a benefit to you. I haven’t sat R2 in years but the last time my per diem was taxed but not the hotel bill. An R2 line isn't like normal airline reserve in that in most cases it just means we haven’t figured it out yet. Bids close on the 21st of each month so by the 22nd you’ll know what line you got. There is another bid for people who got a VTO line. Lines are built from the trips conflicting with pilots vacation and training days. The final schedule is published on the 27th. So if you got a reserve line it could have some days filled in with flying. And by the time your trip actually starts it probably will have flying assigned. In 11 years I would not have to take my shoes off to count the number of days I’ve actually sat R2 reserve. If you’re on R2 you have to be able to report for duty within 90 minutes. R3 is “airport reserve” and you have to be able to block out in 90 minutes. I’m not a CVG person but that would be the only place with R3 for the 747. I don’t know if they even do it. You can be on R3 for 6 hours.

Yeah, I may be a little optimistic with a 2021 estimate.

Just looking for some info: currently an FO at a regional wondering what will happen come Oct 1. I have a phone screening set up this Friday with Atlas/Southern Air. Anyone have any insight into what that phone screen consists of? Also what aircraft most people are getting out of class?
