The cliches are true in your case. Hindsight is always 20/20. Don’t beat yourself up. Thank goodness you’ve kept your finances in line.

Well hopefully you could be back well beyond first year pay if not already out of it and your seniority stays well intact when they hire folks back. Never know, they could then hire a bunch behind you and pull you up from the bottom. I will say the landscape has/will change during this crazy time (past repeats itself, always) and shape-shifting will be the key to survival for the airlines, but that’s just me.

Me personally, cargo has been the safer bet of the two historically, nothing is permanent or everlasting in this dang business. From bottom feeder to top or even starting at the top during the very beginnings of air travel, etc., several are still around while others are just are faded memories on a wall. Time will tell and if you survive this career over several decades with a relative smile , I would say you have been successful. It’s never been cherries and roses without the potential of furlough and/or bankruptcy. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Timing is nearly everything!

Superb job with your finances. It unfortunately takes something like this to prove your efforts worthy. Or, you luck out and have more play money in the end. Wish you the Best!

My 2 cents for anyone who is planning on studying systems before showing up to class is to get a broad strokes understanding. Wait till systems class or at least being on property working with your study group, and an instructor available to ask questions before you really dial it it. Especially if you’re not previously familiar with a Boeing.
Different strokes and all, I did the YT videos 3x prior to receiving the Atlas CBT’s and had those finished prior to showing up.
Failure is not an option

Different strokes indeed. My advice was hardly to promote failure. Nor was failure an option for me.

If you're on the 747, don't forget the ugly sweater guy video.

Those videos are amazing. I probably watched them 3 or 4 times in initial at another carrier and it helped a ton!

It was more of a personal motto then anything else. I wasn’t going to let an opportunity go to waste.

Can’t blame a guy for quoting Gene Kranz

And now for the rest of the story. Doc Donaldson.... aka Sweater guy was a pilot student of one of our current captains back in the day when he was a CFI. Doc was a systems insructor for United. Doc got all of his ratings. Doc flew 747's for Evergreen. Doc is a legend. Doc interviewed at Atlas and Atlas said.......NOOOOOOOO. This sums up Atlas. Dunno where Doc is now but I hope Doc is kickin a$$ somewhere.... He has gotten me through many a recurrent PC oral. Good on ya Doc.
