Any insight into the types of flying a JFK base will see on the 74? Thanks in advance

In addition to the above post about JFK, also wondering what the 74 flying looks like out of LAX. Does 74 flying vary greatly base to base?

I've been off the 747 for a few years now, so someone more up to speed can correct me. That said there were slight variations in flying from base to base in the 747 fleet with the exception of MIA. MIA was significant because a number of the routes would run north-south and be a lot less physically challenging. The rest of the system was a toss-up. To provide less-stale info I took a look at the FO lines for JFK and LAX. It seems it's about the same as it ever was. A LAX FO may wind up on the East coast going to Europe or flying the Pacific. Same thing holds true for JFK, you may wind up crossing the Atlantic or Pacific. Schedule changes are the norm, so you're really going to bidding for days off and footprint rather than destinations, etc.

Like I said, someone still on that fleet can correct and add as needed.

Your pretty spot on that the flying is all over the place, depending on the bid packet. With the new contract things for a pri line holder (read senior) are a bit more stable and regulated. In all actuality to get a real choice of a pri line in the lower 48 you are about 2 years seniority at the moment depending on base, otherwise its SCDY (read random flying with changes) . A good bet though for LAX/CVG/ANC/MEM is your going across the pacific at some point. JFK is 50/50, ORD is 50/50, and IAH is essentially all SCDY random flying. MIA like the above said is South America and some Europe... during the summer they do asia non stops.

What the flying on a specific type/base consists of today means nothing for the future. Bid packages are changed all the time with no input from the crews or union. LAX crews may end up flying pax from the east coast to Europe while at the same time JFK crews may end up flying freight CVG-ICN and then bouncing around Asia for 12 days before heading back to the US. It’s all a toss up.

Bid the base with the easiest commute and the best seniority…then bid for days off, nothing else.

So true! It’s been better with BLG for the most part, but the ripples are still very apparent when you fall off the roller coaster and land on another headed in the other direction. Just tripped on the tracks of mine although the direction is the same…as of now. Ask me again in a minute.

*Not advice by any means, but I bid for food as a tertiary event or maybe 4th order of effect if you will. (double entendre, and both pertain to myself)

Do all the rotations start and end at the base awarded?

What are the typical rotations for a 737 FO new hire?

Nothing is really absolute here. Speaking as an ORD based 74 flyer, it’s a bit rare not to start at base when selecting 30 or 60 day lines. Secondary line holders and whatnot can provide their insights as I am curious myself if they “always” start from base. I did bid for one to start away from base earlier last year and this month I actually was in the truck headed to my gateway when they called to change my travel to somewhere other than base. Still can’t figure out why I answered the phone, but it worked out better. Turned the truck around and went home to my bed for not quite a day and left for the West Coast. Maybe others will chime in, especially a 73 driver.
