Not something required here by any means obviously and mine were for previous employment and does nothing for me here. We have an amazing group from all walks of life, definitely a hodge podge of characters who have some fantastic information/ideas/hole in the wall aspects of life I doubt you will find as much of anywhere else. We just be pilots roaming the world always having to show a passport but never a degree. If your sights are beyond us like FedEx or any slim to none carriers that require one than perhaps go get it. Otherwise higher requirements of most any sort have been dropping like flies over the years. Even Delta dumped their requirement this year. Makes you think doesn’t it, hmmmm.

*Plenty of time in the back of a 74 to comfortably finish a degree if you desire. 777/767 as well is just a guess on my part or during some great layovers. RyeMex mentioned Reserve lines which is a fantastic idea.

That sounds really great. Seems like a great group of pilots there, and freight is where I ultimately want to be at. I honestly don’t know if I can tolerate flight attendants and angry passengers for the rest of my flying career. I’d like to try my hand at UPS or FedEx eventually as a career destination, but if I don’t get selected, it’s not the end of the world for me, and I’d be happy staying at a place like Atlas. Plus, I’ve always wanted to fly a 747. Hopefully they won’t retire those anytime soon and they’ll be around for many years to come. It’s one of those planes on my list to fly before I retire.

The 747 flies cargo that no other western built civilian jet can do. And the military can't, for now, use the -8F. So the -400 will be around for a very long time.

Why don’t they look at O-1 visas or other work permits. While it doesn’t give one the right to immigrate, at least you can live and work and the time frame seems much quicker?

Why would we want them to? This is the first real leverage the profession has had in generations. If Congress give management a special deal to import pilots to solve a problem they created through years of ignoring the facts and not investing in their workers I for one won’t be impressed. Engineering and maintenance in the industry are facing a similar crunch.

Airline pilots are not "Individuals with an extraordinary ability in the sciences, education, business, or athletics"

You can't just import a guy you want, the process is very tedious, expensive and time consuming. It's just not worth it in most cases. And we are all glad that is the way, otherwise our work rules and benefits would mirror those of Canada and Europe and so on.

As much as I love the "Queen of the sky" I have to let progress have its way. True the 747 can fly a lot of outside cargo that no other can, but out size cargo is a limited quantity and a lot of the Jumbos will eventually go away for lack of need. The 777 can't handle the weight the 747 can but compare fuel cost per lb. and the 747 doesn't compare. The FedEx 777 can fly from Guangou to Memphis at max gross weight with reserves (17 hrs.).

True if “max gross weight” refers to takeoff weight. The 777F can only do about 10 hours (HKG/ANC) plus reserves if loaded to max zero fuel weight. However, it will fly 20+ hours with full tanks and about half full of cargo. I’ve done over 19….it was a long, long day. I don’t miss the 747. I’m glad I got to fly it, but it will always be the coolest looking wide-body IMO.

The -8F will be around for some time yes. But the 400s aren’t going to be around much longer. The 777F/777XF/A350Fs will be the growth frames moving forward in the freight industry. Outside cargo that required the nose losing capability of the 74 aren’t as frequent.

Yes the number of airframes will definitely be reduced, but I don't see it going away any time soon. Anything that requires loading through the nose is either Antonovs or Military, or 747.

Depends on the military. They can't use -8 for now, and often would bulk out a 777.
If cargo prices stay where they are now and a 747 charter from HKG to the US goes for over 1mil per flight, the fuel costs don't matter much.

But I agree, -400 in the Express cargo sector won't live for long.
