Southern Air Appoints Industry Veteran Robert L. Crandall to Board of Directors

Press Release Source: Southern Air Holdings, Inc. On Monday January 31, 2011, 6:00 am EST

NORWALK, Conn., Jan. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Air Holdings, Inc. today announced that Robert L. Crandall, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AMR Corporation and American Airlines, has been appointed to the company's Board of Directors.

"Southern Air is one of the most experienced and fastest growing air cargo carriers in the world," said Mr. Crandall. "The company has an exceptional record of performance and great potential in its markets. I look forward to working closely with CEO Dan McHugh, his management team and the Board to support Southern Air's continued expansion and long-term success."

"Bob is renowned in the industry and his decision to join our Board is an important endorsement of what we are accomplishing at Southern Air," said Daniel J. McHugh, Chief Executive Officer of Southern Air. "His deep knowledge of the aviation industry and proven track record of leadership will be invaluable as we seek to position the company to be the world's leading ACMI operator by continuing to expand our customer offerings while maintaining the highest standards of safety, reliability and customer service."

"We are very excited to have Bob join the Southern Air team," said Rowan Taylor, Chairman of the Board of Southern Air and a Partner at Oak Hill Capital Partners. "His profound industry and business experience will be a great asset to Southern Air as it continues to expand and upgrade its fleet and extend its global reach."

Mr. Crandall joined American Airlines in 1973, becoming President in 1982, and Chairman and CEO in 1985. During his 25-year tenure, Mr. Crandall was instrumental in introducing several changes that revolutionized the travel industry. This includes launching an expansion program at American Airlines which more than tripled the company's size and transformed it from a medium-sized domestic carrier to one of the world's leading international airlines with revenues of more than $20 billion.

Mr. Crandall is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Celestica Inc. and a Director of Aircell.

He earned a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

It's not clear what Oak Hill and Crandall are up to, but "Fang" did not sign on merely to be an adviser, a figurehead, or a second banana. It is not in his nature. All hands stand by with grappling hooks and boarding pikes!

Love him or hate him....Bob Crandall is no bean counter with little or no airline experience like many running the show today... Bob Crandall can run an airline...he is no friend of unions however. I agree with Tom... hang boys... it could get interesting.

DC8DRIVER 01-31-2011 08:46 PM

I worked for Crandall ... once. Never again. He invented the "B" scale. He perfected management/pilot spite. He is a snake. If you think for one minute that he is in it for anything other than his own greed, think again.

Read the book "Hard Landings" by Pretzinger(?). It is a study of airline deregulation and features Crandall and most all of the other robber barons of the late 20th century. It helps one understand them and the cold, vile venom that runs through their veins.

You gotta love this guy. Every time CNBC would interview him, ultimately, he would blame the unions for all the airlines woes.

After old sugar Bob see's what Pilot's work for and under what conditions at Southern, he will have a small celebration, saying "see I told everybody pilots would work for nothing". Heck he probably will even advocate a raise, just because the numbers are so small compared to what he is used to.

A little off topic but where would a 2004 hire be at Southern now?

No, I was never in that boat, we had a guy that left midway thru new hire to go to Southern, I was just wondering where he'd be. Thanks!

I don't agree. fang is into money now, i think he's about 80 years old. he was involved in a company that was going to provide cheap air taxi services with very small buisness jets. Those board positions are just friends paying each other money. they show up for one meeting per year and take home millions of dollars. they vote on each others boards and protect each other, its the yale harvard scull and bones clique. jim neff owns or runs southern air, and he's an idiot, decided to stop paaying the leases on the planes in 2002 and shut the company down, furloughed allt he pilots because he thought the lease terms were too expensive! by bringing in crandall, he has the one man in the world who has as foul a mouth as conrad kalitta. That's why he's being brought on board, so that he can tell connie off effectively.

hello?
