DWI

Have a young friend, early 20’s who got a DWI a year or so ago. He just recently got his private license and I guess renewed his medical and checked the box. He said the FAA is requiring him to get evaluated by a drug abuse professional. I’m familiar with the HIMS program, but what kind of person or evaluation does he need for a private? Not really providing advice for him, just told him I’d ask around and see if I could find out where to start. Thanks

In that case I think it's just an evaluation to see if he has an addiction problem. If he's found to have a problem, then he'll need some expensive rehab to hold a medical.

HIMS is a remedial program for those who do have a problem (or possibly 121 pilots who screwed up on the clock and need the HIMS absolution to return to work).
