Night Currency?
 

OK..I have a night flight tomorrow with one of my students, but I have since lapsed my night currency. I was told by one of my superiors that a student doesn't really count as a passenger, therefore I can do the night flight and see if my student won't let me do a few landings myself to update the currency...I just wanted to get a few more opinions on the matter before risking getting busted without being current.

Is your student legal to be the PIC at night? (Night current). If not, then you need to get yourself current first. If your student is current, they'll just act as PIC until you get the landings. That's how I interpret it. I always prefer to be safe, and just do 3 quick stop and go's while the student is getting their weather briefing, etc.

Your superior was right. Neither the CFI nor the student on an instructional flight is required to be landing current.

ditto what Noy said. You might want to take the first landing just to get comfortable and do two more later in the flight if the student lets you.
