Default logging PIC with an SIC type

situation:

a pilot with an SIC type for a C525 sits left seat, while the holder of the PIC type sits right. Can the SIC type holder log PIC?

I can't find anything in 61.51 that says no.

Pretty sure if the aircraft requires a type rating then you have to have a PIC type to log PIC. Maybe there is something about the person with the PIC type giving instruction or something but not sure.

Its a single pilot aircraft....Since the holder of the SIC type is "rated in the aircraft" it seems to me to meet the reqs of 61.51

It is a single pilot aircraft but only for those folks who have a CE525S type rating. An SIC type is no such rating. I do not see how logging PIC time is possible. Even though you are manipulating the controls that does not make you ultimately responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft.

How about getting a PIC type then it would be perfectly legal?

I do not see how you can legally log pic time when you are not rated as a pic. I would check with the FAA if I were you before attempting to log that time since their FAR's book is much thicker than the ones you buy in the pilot shops. As a side note, big purple would not recognize that type of flight time.

its not for me...the guy I fly the plane with just hired someone who had previously logged the time this way and we were wondering. My first instinct was no way. We looked in the regs and couldn't dispute it though.

Could he fly that aircraft single pilot with an SIC type? No. To me that says it all right there. Sounds like padding of the logbook to me. I'd look elsewhere.

Here is what the regs say...

(e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time. (1) A recreational, private, or commercial pilot may log pilot-in- command time only for that flight time during which that person --

(i) Is the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated; As an SIC rated pilot you must have a PIC with you i.e. you are NOT the sole manipulator.

(ii) Is the sole occupant of the aircraft; or Nope

(iii) Except for a recreational pilot, is acting as pilot in command of an aircraft on which more than one pilot is required under the type certification of the aircraft or the regulations under which the flight is conducted. You are not qualified and cannot act as pilot in command.

It is very clear to me. Tell the new-hire to correct his logbook before he gets ejected from an interview... or something worse.

I agree with USN, SIC Types do not allow you to log PIC.
