Default FTD time in log book

I am going through my log book and when I had Flight Training Device (Frasca and the desk top sim approved for instrument training), the time is only under the FTD and Dual Given columns. Is this how it should be, or can these hours count towards total time?

Sim time only.
Do not count sim or any sort of flight training device in your total column.

Dual given? In the sim? I've never met anyone who logged dual given in the sim in their actual times (I noted it, but more for potential questions from the FAA down the road if a student did something).

Surprisingly enough, the definition of "pilot time" (note, NOT "flight time") in 61.1 includes training given in a device.

Bottom line is that even the best device is not an aircraft, so none of it is "flight time" of any sort whatsoever (see the 1.1 definition of "flight time"). I guess in theory once could have a" total time," simulated instrument, dual given, and dual received column in which one combines both, but think of the headache when having to fill out anything (including an 8710 for any future certificate or rating).

So most logbooks separate flight time from device time, everywhere including what a lot of logbooks refer to as the "total duration of flight" column.

For most, as a matter of intelligent bookkeeping more than the rules, device time is kept separate from anything that takes place in an aircraft.

(btw, dual given means nothing from an FAA standpoint, at least until you apply to be a DPE)

Oh jeez...I forgot all about "pilot time".

Thanks NoyGonnaDoIt
