Default Grand Turk and Flight Level

Flying into Grand Turk a few weeks ago and the controller said 'descend and maintain flight level 080.' The captain changed to local altimeter setting through FL180. I asked him why, and his response was 'because that's what we did at Flight Options.'

Am I missing something? I thought that you change to local altimeter setting through 6000' because that's what it says on the chart.

Thanks

You can change to QNH once you have been cleared below the Transition Level.

I'm missing something, if you were cleared to FL 080, why did anybody change to QNH? In any case, it is good to change to standard when cleared above transition and vice versa.

Thats what I thought. I changed mine through 6000' (edit: FL060 is prob better terminology) still not convinced he was right.

Yes, he is over 60.

You were correct, the captain was wrong. Change it when going through the transition level listed on the chart. Sometimes you'll even hear the controller saying "decend and maintain to 7000 on QNH 1017" as a friendly reminder that you're transiting through the trans. level and to change your altimeter to the local setting.

What they said.

Transition Level on the way down
Transition Altitude on the way up

Both are listed in the Jepps. Our SOP is to include the QNH/QNE transition as part of the brief.

If the QNH was below 29.72 or above 30.12 it could have been interesting if there had been traffic at FL090 or FL070.

Walk of Shame

It is not that clear cut. Most EU ops change to STD immediately upon being cleared above the transition to avoid level busts. It's a good SOP where transition altitudes/levels vary and are much lower than FL180. Leave many airports and the first climb clearance by departure often will be above transition.
