121.434 Operating experience

Is it legal for a captain whom has never flown a specific aircraft from the right seat to operate a revenue flight as the First Officer?

Are there "seat dependent tasks?" If so there has to be a training program to cover them. How it's done is left to the POI. It can be a briefing, a slide show, or once around the pattern.

I know with us, during both initial and recurrent, we do a "right seat qual", consisting of an engine failure, landing and something else. Then the capt can sit in both seats.

It depends. Airlines almost always have specific tasks/flows for each seat which you have to be trained/checked on.

Checkairmen can do it because they get qualed for both seats. Some airlines qualify all CA's for the right seat just to give them flexibility (typically bottom feeders).

You hit the nail on the head. I work for Silver Airways. During our 441's all captains are receiving right seat training in the sim. The company used to say that we also needed IOE in the right seat. They have recently changed their mind and now say we don't need the IOE.

The wording in 121.434 is fuzzy at best. I just want to make sure no one gets violated for flying in the right seat without having received IOE.
