Explosive decomp I'd sure like two pilots up there. Sometimes those masks just don't work, and by the time you realize it it's too late.

Also how much rest you going to get when the other dude keeps calling you up to help with WX, comms, etc.? And how about potty breaks, just leave it with George for 3 minutes? Or pee in a bottle? Or maybe have specially trained FA's for that, at least to the PPL solo level?

I don't see this coming to the US any time soon, but it would be best if nobody lowers the bar that far.

I can see this happening with freight, not with pax.
Mark my words, 10 years from now 777 Cargo will be crossing the Pacific and the Atlantic single pilot ops.

Decompression is a software fix.
Turn right, descent, send message, turn left to parallel.
That does not require any snazzy technology.

I have been told An emergency descent in an 350 is 1 button. It will automatically descend to 10,000’ or the grid MORA whichever is higher.

ALPA definitely needs to fight this on all flights in US airspace, not just on US airlines

I am going to make a guess you have done few if any international long haul diverts. Two pilots are working their buts off and the first thing done after stabilizing the aircraft is calling up the relief pilot who becomes invaluable.

I saw this come across CNBC and hoped it would end up being posted here. I predicted reduced augmented by 2024 two years ago and everyone thought I was bonkers. Turns out I might only be a year off.

I fully believe there will be a clean sheet zero pilot large transport jet introduced by 2035. Technology is moving so fast right now, Airbus just recently said they will only upgrade the A320 series incrementally over the next decade vs a new type.

The good news is there will still be a monitor on the ground for the time being. I'm hoping the FAA still categorizes it as a pilot, and we can negotiate from that vantage point. But damn that job is going to suck.

Elon's Starlink service will integrate into it @ 300+ mbps speeds to allow remote monitoring in 4K. The military is already transitioning to using it.

For those wondering when are the good ol' days? They are now. Just remember that, enjoy your job, and save your money. We're still a long way off - but not that long. I really hope I'm wrong and will gladly eat crow!

For single pilot, they need to automate that, if the cabin pressure drops and nobody does anything then descend to 10K/Grid MORA. Not hard to do, but will take time and money to certify and install.

Presumably such a scheme has an FA in the cockpit JS... otherwise you're just right back to germanwings.

They can get pretty close, but cannot actually get there just yet... they need AI tech which doesn't exist. Until recently lot's of people said that the tech was around the corner but they've now realized they have no idea how far off it is.

The automated car industry has recently acknowledged that they don't have a valid timeline either. The challenge is dealing with the unexpected, and when the tech mis-interprets the expected. Seems easy to us, but it's sure hard to write a program to do it.

Single-pilot cockpit with another pilot in the bunk also does not equate to true single pilot ops... they're still relying on a redundant pilot, they just need to cover the minute or two it takes for him to get to the cockpit... ex auto emergency descent.
