Greetings All,

In filling out applications for American, Delta, United, FedEx, UPS, etc., how much detail should be included regarding volunteer time? Should one include details about what they did for the organization or should it be just the name of the organization with the applicant's title?

Tell them how many hours/how often you participate and what you do for the organization, ie soup kitchen cook, youth sports coach, grade school tutor, board of directors, whatever.

Can someone explain the significance of putting down your volunteering activities on an airline pilot application? Why would that make you a better candidate than the next guy?

Is this something they specifically ask for or is it "tell us something else about yourself you would like to add?"

This would be a non factor if I was on the hiring panel. But then again I have no experience in the civilian world.

Airlines are all about community ouchreach and positive optics... folks who have experience in those areas stand out from the crowd who don’t.

Military folks are usually pro-active and capable when it comes to engaging people, ie customers. Your average drooling regional slacker, maybe or maybe not.

I think that emphasis was more focused on civilians, but now that it's here it is a discriminator so it wouldn't hurt to check the box.

But word is that DAL is looking for sustained activity over time... if your volunteer career coincidentally started at about the same time you dropped your letter and your app, they're not buying it. Start early if you're going to...

On airlineapps, list it as an employer with zero salary, provide hours, job description, and POC. In description, note that it's volunteer. Put it on your resume at the bottom, clearly labelled.

Of course it is... they’re in business to make $ buy getting the premium passengers to buy into the experience and cramming as many of the rest of non premium Pax in like sardines.

So if I volunteered with a local soup kitchen, for example, this should go under the employment section and not in the volunteer box? Would it matter if I only volunteered at a place once or twice? Should this also go in the employment section?

Don’t bother listing something you’ve only done once unless it’s like a million dollar donation.
They’re looking for long term sustained interest in a particular charity.
Like you’ve been involved since high school or college.
You’ve got to be a nice person and not an opportunist who volunteered once the day before the application.
