questions about pilot job market and salary
Hi all,
I am thinking about changing my career to be a pilot. My background: university degree, US green card and Chinese passport holder, single guy.
I have checked the ATP Flight School website, it offers a 9-month training program. If I gradate from this training school, they will offer a flight instructor position in its schools national-wide.
I will appreciate your help to answer my questions below:
1, being a flight instructor, how much I can make per month ? I know a girl (already finished 1500 hours ) who graduated from ATP Flight school said she got 25 dollars / hour as flight instructor in ATP school, but I browsed the ATP website someone said $7.50 - $20/hr.
2, I know there is a 1500 hours rule, as a flight instructor how many months require to arrive at 1500 hours in general ? It is not big problem for me to work 6 or even 7 days weekly, as I wanna complete it ASAP.
3, about the job market. I read heaps of news say there is big shortage of pilots. However, I checked the BLS website and The Truth About the Profession, both of these two websites show me that there is not a shortage in pilot field. What is the reality as to the pilot job market ?
4, about the salary. The girl in the Question 1 told me she got 50/ hour as a co-pilot when she got a job in USA, interestingly based on the writer of The Truth About the Profession, an entry level pilot who just got 1500 hours tends to got very low salary, e.g. regional airline co-pilot salary 20k-40k, and major airline co-pilot 50k-60k. Honestly salary is important for me, and the training fee is very expensive after all. What is the salary range for a entry level co-pilot ?
5, is there any occupation illness as a pilot ? such as hearing disorder, prolepsesof lumbar intervertebral disc and insomnia.
Thanks

To answer a few of your questions, plan on making poverty level wages for at least 5 years when starting in this profession. I'm not sure the person who gave you the $20/hr is a good source of information, take a look at the salary tables posted here for a more accurate look at what you can expect to earn.
There is no pilot shortage in the US. There are more ATP holders than there are flying jobs in the entire industry, including flight instructors, ag pilots, etc. People don't pay thousands of dollars for interview prep and resume reviews unless there is significant competition for the job they're trying to get.
Hearing loss is the most likely risk in being a pilot, but proper use of hearing protection minimizes this.
